Society of Physics Students (SPS)

The Society of Physics Students (SPS) is a professional physics association explicitly designed for students. SPS is managed by the American Institute of Physics (AIP) as a service to students and the physics community. SPS membership is open to anyone interested in physics; for membership information, contact your local SPS Chapter Adviser.

SPS exists to promote educational activities for all students interested in physics. Current and past SPS projects initiated and managed by UNCW students are detailed on the local SPS home page.

Sigma Pi Sigma, Physics Honor Society

Sigma Pi Sigma, the national physics honor society, is the honorary branch of the SPS. Sigma Pi Sigma exists to honor outstanding scholarship in physics. New members are inducted into the UNCW Chapter of Sigma Pi Sigma each spring. Admission is by invitation only and based solely on academic achievement. SPS bylaws state that qualifying undergraduates:

  1. Must have completed at least three semesters of full-time college work and at least three semester courses in physics that can be credited toward a physics major.

  2. Shall rank no lower than the upper third of their class in general cumulative scholarship.
