Provost Hosier called the
meeting to order at 3:30 pm.
The minutes of the February
23, 2005, meeting were approved as distributed on the
Web.
Two minor changes were made
to the mission statement revision recommended by the subcommittee of Demski,
Roer and Spackman. A motion to accept
the amended recommendation, and a timetable for review and approval, carried
without dissent. A Web survey of
faculty, staff, and student government leaders will be conducted to gather
reaction to the proposed changes, and the survey results will be presented at
the April 21 meeting of the Planning Council.
At that time, the Council will determine its final recommendation for a
revised mission statement to be presented to the Board of Trustees at their
April 28-29 meeting. The proposed
revised mission statement reads as follows:
The University of North Carolina at Wilmington is a
public comprehensive university dedicated to the integration of teaching and
mentoring with research and service. Through the college of arts and sciences,
the professional schools, and the graduate school, the university seeks to
stimulate intellectual curiosity, imagination, rational thinking, and
thoughtful expression in a broad range of disciplines and professional fields.
The university is committed to providing the highest quality undergraduate and
graduate instruction in an extensive array of programs at the baccalaureate and
master’s levels, as well as a doctoral program in marine biology. The university strives for excellence in
teaching, scholarship and artistic achievement, and service.
UNCW
encourages public access to its educational programs and is committed to
diversity, international perspectives, and community and regional service. Our campus
community strives to create a technologically advanced, safe, and supportive
environment in which students, faculty, and staff work together to develop
their interests, skills, and talents to the fullest extent. UNCW
seeks to celebrate, study, and enrich the heritage, quality of life, education,
and environment of the coastal region.
The Planning Council
discussed the recommendation of the peer study subcommittee (Clark, Lanier, Spackman). Radford
University was removed from the recommended list to reduce the number to the
size of the current list. The Council
authorized Dr. Spackman to convey our recommended peer list, together with
background data, to Dennis Jones, President of NCHEMS and consultant for the
UNC System Peer Study. The recommended
peer list of 15 institutions is as follows.

Information is still being
collected for the OP Long-Range Plan response to the Board of Governors’
Strategic Directions. Discussion of the draft
response was postponed to the April 21 meeting.
Dr. Spackman described
preliminary ideas for a planning brochure that would summarize the salient
features of the Strategic Plan for external audiences. He distributed sample brochures from four
universities, and pointed out their advantages and disadvantages. The discussion that followed included these
comments:
- We may need two brochures: a short version (perhaps a four-page foldover design) for large groups to avoid the impression
that a longer version might give of an overly expensive document that will not
be thoroughly read by busy people, and discarded immediately by many; and a
more comprehensive version for potential major donors.
- Suggested content for the short version included: one page of mission and
identity, a couple of pages on values and goals, and a final page or two of
“points of pride”.
- The brochure(s) should be characterizations (“talking points”) that describe
how UNCW is distinctive.
The meeting was adjourned at
4:40 pm.
