Attending: Ms. Sharon Boyd, Ms. Lisa

Kenneth Spackman.
Provost Hosier called the
meeting to order at 3:30 pm.
The minutes of the October 5
meeting were approved as distributed on the Web.
1.
Provost’s remarks. Provost Hosier informed the Council that the
iterative UNC peer study continues. UNCW
responded on October 20 to consultant Dennis Jones’ second set of proposed peers. We are in agreement on ten of the
proposed fifteen peers, but we stand by our original recommendations for the
remaining five.
President-elect Erskine
Bowles’ visit to the UNCW campus on November 7 was very successful. He did, however, express concern in the areas
of diversity and distance education at UNCW.
2.
Summary
strategies for the progress measures.
Dr. Spackman distributed a draft document that summarized ongoing
strategies to achieve the ten priority progress measures, for the purpose of
ensuring that we have sufficient strategies in place to achieve each target and
to identify any areas in need of attention.
This elicited wide-ranging discussion and a number of suggestions and
questions. Issues raised
included: responsibility for analyzing
data and making recommendations for adjustment, communication about strategies
already in progress, planning process structure, the concept of a “programming
committee” to implement the strategic plan, accountability for the progress
measures, and the very purpose of the Planning Council. No decisions were made.
3.
Performance
indicators supporting the strategic plan.
The Council discussed a draft showing how the progress measures and benchmark
indicators are related to the objectives of the strategic plan. Mr. Demski pointed out that the new 2005
Carnegie Classification effort includes an ongoing initiative to develop new
indicators in the area of service, outreach and community engagement. The Carnegie Foundation will invite
participation by institutions committed to these areas in the development of
these indicators, and UNCW intends to express its interest in volunteering for
this effort. The results may produce
useful indicators for Goal V (and for national data on outreach where data do
not now exist).
The meeting was adjourned at
5:08 pm.
