November 8, 2006

Present: Provost Paul Hosier, Dr. Ron
Core, Dr. David Cordle, Dr. Larry Clark, Dr. Abdou Ndoye (for Dr. Cathy
Barlow), Dr. Virginia Adams, Dr. Robert Roer, Dr. Sue McCaffray, Dr. Richard
Dillaman, Dr. Robert Burrus, Mr. William Fleming, and Mr. Bob Russell.
Others
Attending: Mr. Max Allen, Ms. Lisa Castellino, Dr. Terry
Curran, Ms. Gay Howe, Mr. Mark Lanier, Ms. Cindy Lawson, Dr. Kemille Moore, and
Dr. Kenneth Spackman.
Provost Hosier called the
meeting to order at 3:30 pm.
The minutes of the October 5
meeting were approved as posted on the Web.
Dr. Curran presented UNCW’s plan for achieving annual retention and graduation
rate goals developed in the preceding two meetings. Both the annual targets and the plan were
submitted to UNC-GA on October 24. The
plan comprises 50 strategies, organized into six categories: admissions,
academic planning and assessment, advising and registration, curriculum,
financial aid and scholarships, and student support programs. Each strategy contains a goal, action,
timeline, and estimated cost. The total
estimated cost of implementing the entire plan is $16,735.000. Both Provost Hosier and Dr. Curran regard the
plan as a “work in progress” that will have to be prioritized and condensed to
identify those actions that will have the greatest effect, are accomplishable,
and are affordable.
Ms. Castellino gave a brief
report, embedded in Dr. Curran’s presentation, that
included a seven year survey assessment schedule. The schedule incorporates surveys
administered to admitted students, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors
to address strategically key questions about how college affects students, and,
at the same time, to avoid burdening the same group of students with multiple
surveys in short time spans.
Two observations recurred
during the discussions:
1.
The kinds of data
we collect, and the efforts we expend to retain and graduate cohorts of first-time
freshmen, are equally as important to apply to UNCW’s substantial transfer
student population.
2.
Assessment of how
college affects UNCW students must not be limited to indirect methods of
surveying students for their perceptions and satisfaction; it must also include
direct assessment of student learning and development.
Because of prolonged
discussion of the retention/graduation plan, the second agenda item—an overview
of UNC-GA’s proposed metrics and the Collegiate Learning Assessment—was postponed
to a future meeting.
The meeting was adjourned at
5:17 pm.
