Dear Campus Community:
We are writing to inform you that we are investigating two suspicious fires that occurred on campus over the past 24 hours. The first fire was believed to have started shortly after 11 p.m. last evening, in a patch of grass on the periphery of the parking lot that serves the Seahawk Landing housing community. University police officers responded and were able to extinguish the fire prior to the arrival of the Wilmington Fire Department. One vehicle parked nearby sustained minor damage. No injuries or structural damage were reported and campus buildings were never in danger.
Shortly after 10 a.m. today, University police responded to a report of a second fire, which involved a partially burned and extinguished cloth in a travel lane of the parking deck. No property damage or injuries occurred.
The Wilmington Fire Department and NC State Bureau of Investigation have been consulted. Additional information may be released when available.
Community members are asked to report any suspicious activity to university police at (910) 962-2222 or in case of emergencies, call 9-1-1. Anonymous reports can be submitted online via www.UNCW.edu/police, or by phone at (910)962-TIPS.
We encourage you to visit www.UNCW.edu/ehs/fire.html for fire safety resources and information. Thank you for your continued attention to campus safety.
