News Alert: Seahawk Statue Back in Nest

Dear Campus Community:
We are pleased to announce that the Seahawk statue that was stolen from in front of Warwick Center on July 5 has been located and returned to campus! An anonymous tip was received by Crime Stoppers of Cape Fear on Thursday, August 21 (one day after the UNCW Police Department released footage of the theft). As this remains an open investigation, UNCWPD will release further details when appropriate. For now we just wanted to share the good news, given the attention this theft received both on- and off- campus.

UNCW Releases Security Footage of Seahawk Statue Theft, Announces Reward for Information or Return of Statue
Crime Stoppers of the Cape Fear will offer reward commensurate with quality of information received.
AUGUST 20, 2014: The UNCW Police Department today released security camera footage of the July theft of a beloved Seahawk statue from campus, and announced that Crime Stoppers of the Cape Fear is offering a reward for information about the theft, or for the return of the statue.
The security footage shows three white males, perceived to be between 18 and 22 years old, approaching and forcibly removing the bronze Seahawk statue from its perch in front of Warwick Center. UPD (University Police Department) reports that the theft was discovered on the morning of Saturday, July 5.
Crime Stoppers will offer a reward commensurate with the quality of information received. Anyone with information should call UNCW Police Department at (910) 962-2222 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 531-9845. The statue was dedicated in 2000 and is a well-known fixture and a symbol of pride on the UNCW campus.
