I.     Purpose
   

To provide uniform and consistent guidelines for individuals who volunteer services to UNCW.

 

II.    

Scope

     

Applies to all volunteers who provide services to the University.

         
III.     Policy
      A.

Definition

A volunteer is an individual who provides employment-related services to the University without promise or expectation of compensation or other material benefits. Volunteers are not considered employees and are therefore not eligible for compensation, not covered under the workers' compensation program, and not eligible to file for unemployment.

 

      B.

Every effort is made to match volunteer skills and availability with needs of University departments in a way that is satisfactory to both parties. The volunteer is given a description of duties at the time the assignment is made.

 

      C.

Volunteers will be recognized annually for services provided.

 

IV.     Procedure
      A.

Individuals may volunteer by contacting Human Resources or an individual department. To assist Human Resources in properly matching the volunteer to a work need, individuals will complete a questionnaire provided by Human Resources covering interests, skills, and abilities. Placement and scheduling is arranged by the Assistant Director for Employment Services.

 

      B.

Departments may also recruit volunteers directly for particular needs.

 

      C.

All volunteers must complete a Statement of Voluntary Service (Form HR 1.80) prior to providing voluntary services, and forward it to Human Resources.

 

      D.

Instructions for Preparation of Form HR 08.180

This form is used to document an agreement between an individual providing voluntary service to the university and the department accepting that service.

  3. Send signed, completed forms to Human Resources.

  4. Who Signs

    The statement must be signed by both the individual who will provide the service and an official of the department who will be receiving the services.
