Rumors apparently are circulating that students who apply as pre-engineering "majors" are less likely to be admitted to UNCW because the Admissions Office knows that a certain percentage of them will likely transfer to other UNC-system schools. There is no truth to these rumors. It is important that students who wish to pursue the pre-engineering program specify pre-engineering on the application so they will get proper advising. Students interested in engineering are strongly encouraged to take chemistry, physics, and as many math courses as their high school offers preferably up through pre-calculus or calculus with the terminal course taken in the senior year. All UNCW entering freshmen are required to take a math placement test. If a student does not place into Calculus I (Math 161), summer school will be needed to graduate in four years. Entering freshmen should also attend the earliest possible orientation session. Doing so will leave the rest of the summer to take more math if the placement test indicates more is needed. |
