If you are accepted into UNCW to pursue
the Pre-Engineering Transfer Program, the following is a recommended list of courses
you should take as freshmen entering in the fall. Registration for
these courses is usually done during freshman orientation. You would
be wise to print this page, take it with you to orientation, and register
for these classes in the order shown. You would also be wise to
attend the earliest orientation session you can. You will have a
better selections of classes. Transfer students should consult the
Director
of the pre-engineering program before registering for courses. Freshmen
are welcome to do the same.
An engineering curriculum like the engineering process builds on a foundation of information and is very structured. Therefore, prerequisites and course sequencing are very important. If any of these courses is not taken the first semester, additional semesters or summer sessions may be needed to complete an engineering degree. In particular, the math placement test may show that a prerequisite to Math 161 is needed. Students in this situation may want to consider summer school before or after the freshman year. Pre-engineering and the Basic Studies Requirements Because Pre-Engineering Transfer Program students likely will transfer, meeting the UNCW basic studies requirements usually is not necessary. Meeting the equivalent of the basic studies requirements of the engineering college to which you are interested in transferring is paramount. However, you would be wise to take courses that meet both the UNCW basic studies requirements and the requirements of that engineering college in case you decide to remain at UNCW. Humanity/Social Science Electives With the exception of the art courses (ART), the following humanity/social science courses meet UNCW basic studies requirements and will fulfill the elective requirement shown in the table above: ARH 201, 202, ART 101, 102, ENG 110, 219, 225, 226, HST 101, 102, 201, 202, PAR 101, 110, 115, 201, 202, 211, 215, 216, 230, 235, 236, 242, 247, 248, 345, PED 101, PSY 105, SOC 105. The art courses will meet transfer requirements. To see a complete list of eligible humanity and social science courses transferable to each of the engineering colleges, follow this link. The results of your math placement test will determine which math course you can take first unless you took AP calculus. If you took AP calculus and either did not take the AP exam or did not pass it, you will usually be able to take MAT 161. If you passed the AB exam, you will have to take MAT 162. If you passed the BC exam, you will have to take MAT 261. If you do not feel ready to take 162 or 261, you can audit the lower-level calculus course. |
