UNCW Pre-Engineering Transfer Program
Purpose
The Pre-Engineering Transfer Program offers students the opportunity to complete the first two years of an engineering curriculum at UNCW and upon transfer, complete an engineering degree at either East Carolina University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina State University, or the University of North Carolina at Charlotte during the last two years.  Alternately, students can transfer to any other engineering school they wish. Because of prerequisites and once-a-year scheduling of some courses, some engineering curriculums require transfer after one and one-half years.  An additional summer session or two also is typically needed.  The actual time of transfer is at the student's discretion.  The curriculums follow as closely as possible those offered by the participating colleges of engineering.  The program is approved by all four universities and administered by N. C. State. This program is not a "pre-professional" program; It is a direct path to an engineering degree.

Students can also participate in a three-plus-two arrangement and obtain a degree at UNCW in addition to the engineering degree.  In general, most science and math majors are conducive to this arrangement.  A three-plus-two program is in place for environmental studies/environmental engineering and physics/electrical engineering.

The Pre-Engineering Transfer Program is intended to provide the opportunity for residents of Southeastern North Carolina to explore a career in engineering at the professional level.  However, there are no restrictions on who may pursue the program if admitted to UNCW.

Students who are admitted to UNCW to pursue the Pre-Engineering Transfer Program are not additionally or automatically admitted to any college of engineering. To continue on to a college of engineering, application must be made as a transfer student to the chosen engineering college where all usual transfer requirements must be met.

Courses
The following UNCW courses are included in the Pre-Engineering Transfer Program:

  • English 101, 201
  • Math 161, 162, 261 (Calculus I, II, III) and Math 361 (Differential Equations)
  • Chemistry 101, 102 (General Chemistry Lectures and Labs) [102 is not required for most engineering degree programs]
  • Physics 201 & 202 (Calculus-based; Math 161 must be taken before starting the physics sequence)
  • C++, Java, or FORTRAN programming language (curriculum and college dependent)
  • Introduction to Engineering (EGN 101)
  • Humanities and social sciences (college dependent)
In addition to the above, the following engineering courses are available live through video-conferencing technology:
  • Engineering Statics
  • Engineering Dynamics
  • Solid Mechanics/Strengths of Materials
  • Electric Circuits
  • Fundamentals of Logic Design
  • Introduction to Electrical and Computer Engineering Lab
  • Introduction to Computer Organization
  • Structures & Properties of Engineering Materials/Materials Science
Not all of these courses are required for every engineering degree program, so students will select them based on their intended major.  Because this program is funded by N. C. State, all engineering courses must be taken from N. C. State. These are usually not taken until the sophomore year. In addition to tuition and fees for UNCW courses taken, tuition and fees for engineering courses will be charged by N. C. State.  As of Fall 2007, the tuition and fee rate is $131 per credit hour. Registration assistance and other administrative issues will be provided by the program Director.
