The University of North Carolina Wilmington seeks a new Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, a visionary with the scholarly expertise to serve as our Chief Academic Officer and the administrative experience to excel as our Chief Operations Officer. Since our founding 60 years ago, UNCW has evolved from a small, regional college into a widely respected, Comprehensive I public university with nationally recognized programs in marine biology, creative writing and film studies, among others.
Our faculty integrates teaching, research and service learning experiences to create a unique academic environment for our nearly 12,000 students. High-quality teaching is at the heart of everything we do at UNCW, but research is at the heart of the best teachers. UNCW truly excels at research, conducting more studies, investigations and explorations than several North Carolina universities categorized as “research institutions.” Our Center for Marine Science leads the way in our research endeavors; during the past five years, the funding UNCW received for marine science research was one-half of the total funding for marine science research within the UNC system’s 16 campuses.
UNCW regularly earns accolades among the organizations that rank universities. For the tenth consecutive year, U.S.News & World Report has identified UNCW as one of the top 10 public master's universities in the South in its annual college rankings (sixth in the 2008 edition). For the fourth consecutive year, UNCW received the "Best in the Southeast" and "Best Value" designations by The Princeton Review, and Kiplinger’s 2008 rankings recognize UNCW as one of the top five "Best Values" among public universities in North Carolina.
The consistent pursuit of academic excellence and operational efficiency define the Provost’s role at UNCW. We seek an imaginative thinker with the energy and skill to help guide our collective vision. To move the university from very good to great, the Provost will have the opportunity to work with the best faculty and staff in North Carolina.
It is no wonder UNCW attracts many of the best and brightest students from North Carolina and beyond (our average SAT for freshmen ranks third in the UNC system). Students attending UNCW know they will benefit from challenging academics in a supportive environment. They know they will forge strong relationships with faculty and staff, discovering mentors to guide them toward new levels of personal accomplishments. They know they will live and learn on a neo-Georgian-inspired, 650-acre campus located between historic, downtown Wilmington, N.C., and the teal-blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
We are extremely proud of UNCW and our national reputation for providing students with the most powerful learning experience possible. The outstanding quality of our academic programs, combined with the ambience of coastal North Carolina and the culture of a vibrant port city, make our Provost position a special opportunity. If you want to make a difference at a university with our potential – if you want to help UNCW soar to greatness – I invite you to apply.
Sincerely yours,
Rosemary DePaolo
