2014 Summer Undergraduate Research and Creativity Award Winners Announced
ETEAL and CSURF are pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 Summer Undergraduate Research and Creativity Awards (SURCA). Thirty-two students and twenty UNCW faculty members have been awarded up to $3,000 in support to carry out 19 different, team-based research and creative projects over the summer.
The collaboration between ETEAL (Experiencing Transformative Education through Applied Learning) and CSURF (Center for the Support of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships) reinforces UNCW’s commitment to providing students with concrete applied learning experiences.
“Not only do students get the opportunity to work on a research or creative project, but they also work with faculty on the project design and reporting aspects. By taking part in a greater number of steps—obtaining funding, executing the project, and accounting for the results—these faculty-mentored student projects provide UNCW students with a more comprehensive experience of what it takes to carry out research and creative work under real-world conditions,” commented Dr. Jess Boersma, Interim Director of ETEAL.
Dr. Kate Bruce, Director of the Honors College and CSURF, noted that more than 40 competitive proposals were submitted in under two weeks, underscoring the campus interest and need for these summer applied learning initiatives: “We hope that the university will be able to support future initiatives like this so that we can engage our faculty and students in similarly innovative and worthwhile projects that are so abundant on our campus.”
