Groundwater Research

Dr. Eric Henry, Department of Geography and Geology, is a groundwater hydrologist whose general research interests include subsurface contaminant transport and remediation. His recent research has involved numerical and experimental studies related to the effect of surface-active organic contaminants on flow and transport in the vadose zone.

Dr. Bongkeun Song, Biology and Marine Biology, is studying the biogeochemistry of arsenic cycling ground water.

Dr. Craig Tobias', Department of Geography and Geology, recent research has focused on removal of groundwater nitrogen loads by coastal salt marshes, constructing estuary-scale nitrogen budgets, examining coupled carbon and oxygen dynamics in alkaline streams, and developing techniques to measure reaction rates in the field across hydraulically active interfaces.

UNCW educational documentary, "Troubled Waters," helps educate middle-school and high school students identify groundwater contaminates.
