Three in Five or 60 Percent?

"Try to put '1 in 5' in a decimal form. It is very difficult," says psychology professor Dale Cohen. Cohen has found that most people struggle to convert different representations of quantity in small numbers because we use a verbal rule-based system rather than intuitive translation to solve these sorts of problems. One of his main research objectives, funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, part of NIH, is to identify how training and learning can affect an individual's "number sense" of small numbers. read more...

2005: Memories and Hope: not all lost in the aging process

Misplaced car keys. A name forgotten just minutes after meeting someone new. Purposely entering a room, then not being able to remember what you were going to do there. Let's face it, your memory may not be what it once was. That's why adding one step to your annual checkup can offer more than peace of mind. It just might save your mind. If three UNCW psychology professors are successful, no checkup will be complete until everyone over the age of 55 undergoes an annual "memory test." Their advocacy could put UNCW on the map as a memory research center. This initiative took form with the recent opening of Memory Assessment Research Services (MARS) in Wilmington. read more...
