Ecpnomic Transformation Meeting Bios

 

Dr. Rosemary DePaolo became Chancellor of the University of North Carolina Wilmington in July 2003.  Under her visionary leadership, UNCW has attained national prominence as a model for teaching, research and service.  A highlight of her administration is an unprecedented university-wide strategic planning process which led to the formation of institutional goals that reflect the university’s commitment to providing its students with the most powerful learning experience possible.  Dr. DePaolo is a recognized nationally as a humanities scholar and leader in higher education.

Dr. Bill Gash, Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of the University of North Carolina Pembroke since 2001.  Even as Associate Vice Chancellor, he finds time to teach courses in his studied fields of Music, Business and Education.  Dr. Gash is an expert organ player and enjoys playing for holiday programs and other special events on campus.

Congressman Mike McIntyre was first elected to represent North Carolina’s 7th Congressional District in the US House of Representatives in 1996.  A leadership survey by the Wilmington Star-News, found that Congressman Mike McIntyre, is the area’s “most powerful and effective leader”.  Not only was he ranked first among government and political leaders, he was also “first among all leaders,” including those in positions of business and civic leadership.  He is now serving in his 7th term.

Mr. Dale B. Carroll, Deputy Secretary/COO of the NC Department of Commerce.  Carroll has worked all across the state during his 30-year career, and is well respected by key leaders in Raleigh and every region of NC.

Mr. Ken Allen, Senior Economic Developer and Regional Manager for the NC Department of Commerce has over 30 years experience in business and industry.  In 2008 Allen began working as Economic Developer/Existing Industry Specialist for the NC Department of Commerce and in 2008 he transitioned into the position of Senior Developer/Regional Manager.  He manages an eleven county region for new industry recruitment, existing industry services, and other economic development services, including strategic planning and site certification.

Mr. Steve Yost has served as marketing manager for North Carolina’s Southeast (NCSE) since 2005 and has been engaged in regional economic development for 15 years.  From 2000-2005, Steve served as Senior Developer and Regional Manager for the NC Department of Commerce in southeastern NC and from 1994-2000 as Executive Director for the Columbus County Economic Development Commission.

Dr. Michael J. McKenna, former Chairman of Merrion Pharmaceuticals, has over 30 years of industry experience in new product development and safety evaluation as a toxicologist, R & D manager, senior pharmaceutical executive, and as an advisor to emerging biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies.  Dr. McKenna was also a founder and Chief Operating Officer of Pharma Research Corporation, a contract clinical research organization located in Wilmington, NC.

Mr. Norris Tolson, President and CEO, North Carolina Biotechnology Center, is an Edgecombe County native  with a distinguished career of leadership in industry and state government.  He took the helm of the Biotechnology Center on July 2, 2007.

Dr. Sharon Thompson, has been with Brunswick Community College since March 1, 2006 and serves as the Vice President for Academic Services.  Dr. Thompson has 25 years of public service experience including 15 years in NC community colleges.

Dr. Dan Baden, Director, Center for Marine Sciences and William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Marine Sciences, is internationally known for his seminal work in the area of Red Tides.  His work has spanned biochemistry, ecology, toxicology, marine biomedicine and biotechnology, and oceans and human health.  Dr. Baden came to UNCW in late 1999 and since then has generated in excess of $15 million in Federal support at UNCW.  Dr. Baden’s first call as an expert was from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1978, when he was still a graduate student.

Mr. Tom Eagar, CEO, North Carolina Ports Authority, is considered one of the most highly respected port operators in the country.  His 30-year career in maritime transportation also includes senior management positions. Mr. Eagar developed a wide and well-rounded range of maritime transportation industry experience in the areas of business development, port operations, labor relations, government affairs and organization development.

Mr. Tom Gaskill, Executive Director, Military Growth Task Force, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and New  River Air Station.  Col. Gaskill served 26 years in the U.S. Marine Corps and prior to accepting the role of Executive Director, he served as Chief of Staff, Second Marine Aircraft Wing in Al Asad, Iraq, where he oversaw the staff functioning of a 6,000 person organization conducting combat operations while also serving as Deputy Installation Commander of a base with more than 16,000 personnel.

Military Growth Task Force of North Carolina's Eastern Region

 

Brigadier General U. S. Air Force (retired) Paul Dordal is the executive director of the BRAC Regional Task Force, a regional organization composed of 11 counties and 73 municipalities surrounding Fort Bragg.  A graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, he served 29 years on active duty until he retired in 2000 as a Brigadier General.
