The Staff Council’s November 2008 Teal Spotlight: Sonya Kelly, Psychology Department
The Teal Spotlight, presented by the UNCW Staff Council, highlights the dedicated staff members on the campus of UNC Wilmington. Each staff member is chosen at random for an interview, and Sonya Kelly was selected for the November 2008 Teal Spotlight.
With a phone interview, Sonya Kelly began her career at UNC Wilmington in the spring of 2000. During that time she was hired as an Administrative Assistant in the Department of Psychology, andis where Sonya currently and contentedly works with fellow administrators, students and faculty members.
Sonya thoroughly enjoys working with different personality types and is inquisitive in how other individuals interact. The part of her job that she likes least is passing on the “bad news” to a student regarding graduation. On the other hand, the part of her job she finds the most enjoyable, and what makes it all worthwhile for Sonya, is a simple unexpected “thank you” from a student.
Her current job duties include on-campus processing request for travel, HR, class scheduling, grants and a host of other administrative duties. During Sonya's career at UNC Wilmington, circumstances beyond her control led her to move away for a brief period of time. During her short departure, Sonya found herself on the phone helping a new UNCW staff member with office proceduresand felt that she always remained a part of UNC Wilmington. Needless to say, Sonya has returned and continues to be a dedicated UNC Wilmington staff member.
A free lunch certificate, donated by UNCW Campus Dining Service, was presented to Sonya in appreciation for a job well done. Congratulations to Sonya Kelly, this month’s Teal Spotlight.
