Interpersonal violence is the most common way that we are touched by abuse or assault. Many of us will know someone who has been victimized by assault, abuse, stalking or harassment. Many of us will also be victims of interpersonal violence. Often, these occurrences will take place within the context of ongoing or former relationships. Or, we may be emotionally or physically hurt by an acquaintance.
The fact that the damage is done by someone we do not expect to harm us is shocking and may lead to self-blame and a sense of loss of control over our lives.

Report a Behavior
If the behavior of a student is concerned to you, there are several resources to consult:
- The Office of the Dean of Students is a primary contact for crisis response, student behavior in the community, and personal consultation. 962-3119.
- The University Police Department can provide consultation on behavioral issues, threat assessments, and referral and response. 962-2222.
- The Counseling Center is a confidential service for student counseling concerns. The counseling center can provide consultation to community members about how to make an effective referral and some aspects of student behavior. 962-3746.
* It should be noted that the Counseling Center can not confirm whether any student is a client nor provide any information about any student clients without a signed release by that student.
Student Threat Assessment Team
The Student Threat Assessment Team is comprised of a select group of university administrators charged with the responsibility of identifying, investigating, assessing, and monitoring high risk behaviors exhibited by UNCW students. In addition, the group attempts to determine whether based on behaviors exhibited by the student, the student may pose a threat to the University community.
UNCW Resources for Interpersonal Violence Response
University Police provide police and security services to the UNCW community. Officers are a crucial support for students, faculty and staff in crisis situations both on campus and in other jurisdictions.
Office of the Dean of Students
As the primary advocate for the UNCW student body, the Office of the Dean of Students is often called upon during crisis or emergency situations. This office works collaboratively with other UNCW safety and violence prevention departments to support students as well as to handle the university’s judicial process.
The Counseling Center services include counseling for many personal issues students encounter. In addition, counseling staff provide professional consultation to students, faculty, staff and the university community. On-call counselors are available during regular, designated office hours and after hours for emergency or crisis situations.
UNCW’s Human Resources department trains faculty and staff in policies and procedures ensuring a safe workplace environment. With a wide range of trainings for UNCW employees, including Diversity and Workplace Violence Prevention trainings, the Human Resources professionals address issues of harassment, assault and domestic violence as they affect faculty and staff.
