Meet a Scientist

Meet Dr. Jack Hall

I am a science guy.
I like rocks.
I like fossils.
I like the ocean.

As a kid growing up in Michigan, I watched the Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau on television and decided that I wanted to be a marine biologist (http://www.cousteau.org/). I got certified to scuba dive when I was fifteen. When I was a freshman in college I took an environmental geology class that really got me interested in paleontology. I decided to combine my two interests by studying marine fossils. Today, I am Chairman of the Department of Environmental Studies at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. I am also one of the regional directors for the Science Olympiad competition that is held each spring at UNCW (http://www.ncsu.edu/science_olympiad).

In my spare time, I still love to scuba dive. Every Thursday at 2:30 p.m. you can watch me diving in the large tank of the Cape Fear Shoals Exhibit at the North Carolina Aquarium at Ft. Fisher (http://www.aquariums.state.nc.us/files/ff-capefearshoals.htm).
