We are delighted to announce that Dr. Pat Shane, Associate Director of
the NC-MSEN Center at UNC Chapel Hill has been chosen as President Elect
of NSTA, beginning in July of this year. She will then be President in
2009-10 and Past President in 2010-11.
• DPI Announcement: The Elementary Division, along with the Middle and Secondary Division at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction recently merged with the Instructional Technology Division to form a K-12 Curriculum, Instruction and Technology Division. Everly Broadway is now the Section Chief for K-12 Mathematics and Edd Dunlap is now the Section Chief for K-12 Science.

- Announcing the competition to
select North Carolina's two
representatives to the 2008 National Youth Science Camp. Students must be graduating seniors and commit to full attendance at the camp (June 29-July 26). Applications must be submitted by February 18.Application forms are available on the Science Camp website at www.nysc.org/2008 and must be submitted directly to North Carolina’s selection coordinator, Ragan Spain at the following address. Applications must be received by Monday, February 18, 2008.

- The North Carolina
Aquarium at Fort Fisher is working on an event and programs for 2008
focusing on amphibians for "Year of the Frog." They are kicking off
on leap day, Feb. 29 with a reptile and amphibian event that
weekend. In addition, they hope to implement an exciting classroom
project for a few select schools.

- With mixed emotions, we say farewell to Erica Neu who has served as SMEC's office assistant since September 2005. Erica and her husband are returning home to Florida where she will continue her graduate studies. We will miss Erica very much and wish her well!

The North Carolina LASER K-12 Science Education Strategic Planning Institute offers preK-12 school districts an opportunity to develop a high quality science education program aligned with North Carolina's Standard Course of Study. ARMADA Project- Research and Mentoring Experiences for Teachers: The University of Rhode Island's Office of Marine Programs is now accepting applications for the ARMADA Project, funded by the National Science Foundation. The ARMADA Project provides K-12 teachers an opportunity to actively participate in ocean, polar and environmental science research and peer mentoring. Research experiences will take place during the summer. Application deadline: February 4, 2008.
