The City of Ember

By Jeanne DuPrau

At the age of twelve children living in the city of Ember finish school and join the work force. The worse job they can be assigned is pipeswork laborer because it must be done in tunnels deep underground where the city's generator is located. The great lights of Ember have depended upon this generator for more than 200 years, but now the lights are beginning to flicker warning of an impending blackout. When people question Ember's mayor about the flickering lights they are punished. Two young laborers decide to solve the problem of the lights themselves. They discover a mysterious message that leads them on an adventure far from the tunnels of Ember where they discover the secret of their city and its generator.
