Summer Ventures in
Science and Mathematics
This
year UNCW again will host one of six
Summer Ventures in
Science and Mathematics (SVSM) Institutes administered b
y
the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM). SVSM is a cost-free,
state-funded program for academically talented students who may pursue careers
based in science and mathematics.
The program brings rising juniors and seniors together in residential settings for four weeks of intensive study on a university campus (Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, NC Central University, UNC Charlotte, UNC Wilmington, or Western Carolina University.)
A distinguished faculty of
UNCW professors and master high school teachers guides students through an
academic program of specially designed courses to provide experience in
scientific inquiry and mathematical problem solving.
At UNCW, Summer Ventures is administered through the Science and Mathematics Education Center, Mrs. Karen Shafer, SMEC Director. Mr. Rick Demolina, the SMEC Assistant Director, coordinates SVSM program logistics, while Dr. Gabriel Lugo, UNCW Department of Mathematics and Statistics, is the SVSM Faculty Liaison. Mrs. Kim Cavender is the SVSM Director of Residence Life.
If you will be a NC high school sophomore or junior next school year, 2009-10, and are interested in Summer Ventures 2010, begin planning now! The SVSM 2010 applications will be sent to all NC high school guidance offices in October 2009. Application packages must be postmarked to the SVSM state coordinator's office by the deadline, January 31, 2010.
