Professional Development Programs
Introductory Biotechnology
Dates: June 16-20, 2008
Time: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Location: UNCW Dobo Hall.

Registration Fee: $75 payable to NC Biotechnology Center
Stipend: $50/day - Breakfast and lunch provided;
lodging for out of town teachers.
Renewal Credit Offered: 3.0 CEUs
This five day, activity-based workshop will cover an introduction to biotechnology, DNA structure and function, expression and regulation, protein structure and function, transformation of E. coli, and PCR amplification. Supplemental workshop activities will address the science content and also the "Science and Technology" and "Personal and Social Perspectives" program strands in the NC Standard Course of Study. SITE: K-2 Science
Dates: August 4 - August 8, 2008, fall '08 and spring '09 TBA
Time: 8:30 am - 3:30 pm
Location: UNCW Watson School of Education, Room 223.

Cost to LEA: $400
for nine days. School systems should pay for participant's
registration and two substitute days. Optional but strongly encouraged,
are stipends for summer and Saturday sessions and travel funds for teachers.
Renewal Credit Offered: 5.4 CEUs
SITE: K-2 Science is a nine-day institute (five
days in the summer and four days during the 2008-2009 school year) that focuses
on the three science curriculum modules that run through the NC Science
Standard Course of Study for Grades K-2. The Institute modules
include: Earth Systems, Force & Matter, and Living Organisms.

SITE: 3-5 Science

SITE: Content
Area Reading in Science And Mathematics (CARSAM)
- Grades 6-12

Renewal Credit Offered: 3.0 READING CEUs
SITE: CARSAM is a five-day institute that will
focus on strategies for increasing student learning in grades 6-12 by enabling
them to cope more effectively with required reading and writing. This is a
hands-on institute; all lessons will be applied directly to participants'
classroom textbooks and other reading materials. Instruction will involve
analyzing texts used in classrooms, designing lessons to help students use those
texts and other written materials more successfully. Topics include:
Before, during and after comprehension strategies---Principles of working with
struggling readers---Readability of texts and other written materials---5E
lessons and metacognitive strategies.

Middle Math Summer
Institute for Grades 6, 7 and 8

In response to teacher requests, this workshop has been divided into grade-specific content sessions. Each ten hour session will focus on the mathematics curriculum competencies in the NCSCOS using activities, manipulatives and state math kits. Dr. Kelli Slaten, UNCW Dept. Mathematics & Statistics, will provide graphing calculator instruction in the 8th grade session.
SAFETY in the SCIENCE
CLASSROOM
Date: August 22, 2008

Registration: $75
This one day workshop is targeted for high school science teachers. Its
theme is "Keep it Fun, Keep it Safe." This interactive experience will
cover the inquiry strand of the NCSCOS that requires "doing" science, the legal
side of science classroom safety, discussion of safe chemical storage, inventory
and disposal, and HANDS-ON practice using safety devices found in the typical
science lab including fire extinguishers, eyewashes, fire blankets, showers, and
sand buckets.
