Sociology The department invites all sociology majors to participate in the John Rice scholarship program. Recipient will be awarded a scholarship of $1,000 for one year. Students who apply should declare sociology as their major. Applicants are required to complete an application form and submit it with a short essay and other supporting documents by April 11, 2008. The John H. Scalf Sociology Award, named for the founder of the Department, is granted to a senior major for excellence in sociology. Upper level sociolgy students can apply for research fellowships for tuition waivers, awarded each year. Also, the University Bookstore annually provides textbook scholarships to outstanding sociology students. Some students qualify for part-time employment in the Department through the Work Study and Work Assistant programs. Criminal Justice The department invites all criminal justice majors to participate in the Ben David scholarship program. Recipient will be awarded a scholarship of $1,000 for one year. Students who apply should declare criminal justice as their major. Applicants are required to complete an application form and submit it with a short essay and other supporting documents by April 11, 2008. Faculty members in the criminal justice program have established two awards: the Academic Excellence Award is in recognition of the graduating senior in criminal justice with the highest overall grade point average, and the Troy Carr Criminal Justice Student of the Year Award, in memory of ALE Agent Troy Carr (UNCW class of 92) who was killed in the line-of-duty in May, 1994.
