Sociology

Undergraduate training in sociology can open a variety of doors in the business and human services fields. To name a few, customer relations, social services, criminal justice system, positions in sales and human resource management, are all possibilites for sociology graduates. The solid base students recieve in research techniques, computer applications and data analysis prepares enables them to compete for positions involving program-evaluation, research, policy analysis and other social science and business fields. These skills gained are those that will provide students wtih a competitive advantage in today and tomorrow's information society.

Sociology provides excellent preparation for students pursuing graduate study in fields such as gerontology, public administration and criminal jusitice. Also, those pursuing pre-professional programs, such as law, may want to consider sociology as a major. In all of these, an understanding of human social relations and social organizations would contribute to one's success.

An advanced degree in sociology enables one to be a professional sociologist and qualify for teaching and research positions in academics settings. Additionally, a variety of research, administrative and applied positions in both the private and public sectors become possibilities with a graduate degree.

Criminal Justice

Criminal Justice is a valuable field of study for students who desire a background in social science and a direct career path upon graduation. Many graduates work in North Carolina law enforcement agencies such as the Wilmington Police Department, Sheriff's Department, the State Police, Alcohol, Law Enforcement, or supporting organizations such as Adult Probation and Parole and county and state correctional facilities. Other graduates pursue law degrees or federal government positions. Some choose advocacy work with social service agencies. We also prepare our students for graduate programs in criminal justice and other related areas.
