Student Organization Leadership Awards

The Campus Activities & Involvement Center is planning for the end of the year Student Organization Leadership Awards.  We believe that our student organizations add an undeniable value to our campus community and furthermore, the student leaders of these organizations deserve to be recognized for their efforts and commitment to this university. We offer several awards created to celebrate the efforts of student organizations and their impact at UNCW.

Applications for awards will only be accepted via email to activities@uncw.edu. Hard copies of applications and supplemental materials will NOT be accepted. This is a result of our efforts to be more sustainable and efficient in our annual programming efforts. Each individual award application, along with any supplemental application materials, must be consolidated to one electronic file, not to exceed 5 pages in length. If your file is too large to email, you may submit a CD to the Involvement Center (FSC 2029) by the set deadline. If your organization is applying for multiple awards, each award application should be in a separate electronic file (e.g. XYZ_Organization_Social_Program.doc, XYZ_Organization_Unsung_Hero.doc).

Nominations are due via email to activities@uncw.edu by Friday, March 6th at 5pm.

Recognition will be given at the Student Organization Appreciation Day on Thursday, April 16, with a select few awards that will be recognized at the Cornerstone Student Leadership Ceremony on Wednesday, April 22, 2009.  More information will follow regarding the specifics of each award recognition and event.

If there are any questions, please feel free to call our office at 910.962.3553, email us at activities@uncw.edu, instant message us at uncwCAIC (AOL IM), or visit us in FSC 2029.

Who can submit nominations?

Anyone can submit a nomination on behalf of a student organization, although most of our applications come directly from the organizations themselves, so don't be shy about self-nominating!

Do you have any helpful hints to refer to when putting together an award nomination?

Yes, we do! In mid-February, Scott Busiel (07-08 Outstanding Student Organization Leader and 06-07 SGA Scholarship Recipient) facilitated an excellent workshop offering helpful hints for student organization leaders who are now going through the application process. You can access his PowerPoint presentation here.

What's the deadline again?

Nomination applications and materials are due via email to activities@uncw.edu by Friday, March 6, 2009 at 5pm . We realize that student organizations hold excellent programs and events in late March and April but we must set the deadline early enough for the Student Organizations Committee (SOC) to review and vote on all the nominees. If you have information on an event that is planned but yet to happen, you are encouraged to submit an application for the selection committee to consider.

Categories for the Student Organization of the Year - Teal and Gold:

This award was separated into two categories, Teal and Gold, beginning with the 2007-2008 academic year. These categories were developed to promote an equitable application process which will allow for organizations with comparable resources to compete at a fair level.

     *Categories:

Teal: Organizations that have an annual operating budget of $30,000 or more and have a designated (either by job description or/or departmental expectation) full-time UNCW faculty/staff advisor.

               Gold: All other registered organizations.

Student Organization of the Year Awards will be given to one student organization in each category which exemplifies commitment to the betterment and strengthening of the UNCW community. These organizations should have strong leaders who consistently work together toward the group’s common goals. In addition, these organizations should serve as role models for the other UNCW registered student organizations.
