Fitness Workshops/Events Spring 2008

Spring into Spring

Commit to be fit!  Get an hour of Q and A about all things fitness and nutrition.

Nutrition Workshop

Ready to make some healthy lifestyle changes for 2008?  Drop dieting and make some healthy eating goals that will help you shed extra pounds and keep them off for good! Wed., Jan. 16, 5:30-6:30p.m., SRC 114.

Aikido

Use the principles of harmony and circular motion to control any attack that is directed at us.  Aikido teaches one to center oneself while being attacked and to carry this centering off the mat and into their daily lives.  All levels welcome. $30.00 NON-REFUNDABLE fee. Eastern Modalities I – Acupressure and Massage

On The Ball

Learn fun ways to incorporate stability ball exercises into your workout routine.  This is a great way to work on balance/CORE, and make common exercises a little more challenging! Wed., Jan. 23, 4:45-6p.m., Location TBD.

Bite the Bug before it Bites YOU!

Illnesses like colds, the flu, and sore throats are hard to escape, especially when living in residence halls or an apartment. Learn basic nutrition and wellness practices to combat a cold, fight the flu, or simply boost ones immune system.

Shag Dance Class

Shag dancing began from swing on the beaches of the Carolinas.  Learn to take swing dancing one step further and shag to the legendary beach music of our area.

Healthy Budget Cooking I

Grocery shopping can be very confusing these days with so many different product choices! Learn to use the food label to help you select healthy foods, and learn how to avoid common pitfalls in grocery shopping. Tue., Mar. 18, 5-7p.m., SRC 114.

Interactive workshop that includes an in-depth discussion regarding stress’s impact on health, how to recognize stress and how to better manage stress. Tue., Apr. 22, 5-7p.m., SRC 114.

Massage

Do you enjoy massages? Then come and learn about various massage techniques and their “healing powers” in our massage workshop. Topics may include back massage, partner massage, chair massage, and more! Wednesday, April 23, 7-8:30pm, SRC 114

Fitness Competitions

Endurance Challenge

Men will complete in:  Running, dips, pull-ups, knee Raises, and push-ups.

Women will complete in:  Running, assisted pull-ups and dips, modified push-ups, knee raises.  Participants must meet minimum requirements in 4 of 5 categories to be eligible.

Date:  Tuesday, February 5

Time:  5-7p.m.

Location:  SRC Court 3

Aerobathon

Exciting 2 hour exercise session with the Group Exercise Instructors to try out class being offered at the Student Recreation Center such as:  CORE, Step, Zumba, Boxing, Pilates, Yoga, and more.  Prizes are given away!

Date:  Wednesday, February 20

Time:  5:30-7p.m.

Location:  SRC Aerobics Room

Bench Press Competition

Open to men and women!  Test your own limits with a one rep. max. Bench press based upon your body weight.

Date:  Tuesday, February 26

Time:  5-7p.m.

Location:  Harris Teeter Fitness Center

Powerhouse Competition

Meet the minimum qualifications in each of the components Men:  Bench Press, Squat, Dead Lift, and Clean.  Women:  Bench Press, Squat, Claves, and Shrugs (Dumbbells).  Appropriate standards are set for men and women to compete based on body weight.

Date:  Tuesday, March 25

Time:  5-7p.m.
