Where will the Student Recreation Center (SRC) be located?
On the corner of Price Drive, facing the Chancellor's Walk, diagonally across from Wagoner Hall.
Is this an athletic facility?
This facility is a Student Recreation Center and will give us an opportunity to offer workout space and free play space at times that we have been unable to due to sharing our facility with two other areas.
How big will the Fitness Center be?
It will be twice the size of the current facility.
Will there be more space for aerobics?
The aerobics room will be approximately 33% larger but we are working with consultants on making a large aerobics area out of one of the basketball courts to allow us to offer large classes during heavy use times. We will be using the same resilient flooring on that court that will be used in the aerobics room leaving our biggest concern as the quality of the music for your enjoyment.
Will we be able to find more time for free play basketball and volleyball?
Afternoon free play should be the best game in town! We are devoted to trying to always having some space available for free play. Intramural play always takes up space but we are going to try to have free play space for students.
How big will the SRC be?
Please see the breakdown on estimated square footage (approx. 64,000 sq. ft.) We tried to design a building to get as much functional space as we could for the money that we have available.
How much will the SRC cost?
We have borrowed approximately $7.3 million for construction and $500,000 for movable equipment (i.e., cardiovascular equipment, selectorized equipment, free weights, aerobics equipment, pads, volleyball equipment, etc.)
Who pays for this building?
Student fees pay for this facility. The State of North Carolina does not permit state dollars to go into building recreation areas or facilities.
What are the highlights of the facility?
The climbing wall area that we are putting in should be a great addition to our outdoor program. It will give everyone a chance to try climbing in a controlled safe environment.
The raised walking, jogging and running track will be a great addition for those really hot days or those winter nights when it gets dark so early. It should be a much more inviting environment with a lot of sunshine coming through our large windows.
The Campus Recreation Staff is extremely excited about the new opportunities that you as students will have upon completion of this facility!
What kind of equipment will we get for the Fitness Center and Aerobics Program?
We are looking at top of the line, state of the art cardiovascular and selectorized equipment along with top quality free weight equipment. Our consultant has designed fitness centers at universities throughout the country along with the Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Timberwolves Training Center.
The aerobics equipment we purchase is always top quality due to the sensitivity and jarring it takes.
When will the SRC break ground?
Ceremonial groundbreaking occured Friday, May 1, 1998. Actual construction will begin September 1998.
When will the SRC be completed and open?
Never knowing what will happen with the construction industry, it looks like a 14 month construction process which puts us (without any delays) at January of 2000. Not soon enough for you or for our staff!
What will happen with Hanover and Trask when the SRC opens?
The projections are to offer additional HPER and PED classes during the day and early evenings. Athletics is still trying to expand indoor practice times as teams want to become more competitive in our conference and nation.
Campus Recreation will still have to use the pool and racquetball courts for free play space and Intramurals will still require the use of Hanover and Trask court space to meet the needs of our growing program.
It may create a little extra space to help meet the needs of some our Sport Clubs that have struggled to find practice space in the past. As you can see, there won't be much free time in these facilities even after we move to our new location.
