Rationale

The Student/University Recreation Center would provide space dedicated to open recreation in order to meet the present and future needs of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. The facility would be used for recreational purposes and the various programs offered by the Office of Campus Recreation.

Recreational opportunities taht will be provided by the facility include: basketball, volleyball, badminton, recquetball, squash, aerobics, running/walking, weight/cardiovascular training, lap swimming/leisure swimming, aqua aerobics, rock climbing, etc. The building will also house storage, issue and resource areas for the Discover Outdoor Recreation Program. This facility would be designed in accordance with the regulations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (A and the University's stated policy of providing equal access to all facilities.

In the widely acclaimed book "College: The Undergraduate Experience" (1987), The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancment of Teaching contends that "What students do in dining halls, the playing fields and in residence halls all combine to influence the outcome of the college education, and the challenge in building community, is to extend the resources for learning on campus and to see academic and non-academic life as interlocked (177)."

This facility would enable the individual to improve total fitness, develop healthy lifestyle habits they could take with them for the rest of their lives, improve sport and outdoor recreation skills, active lifestyles, meet and interact with others.

Whether it be over a friendly game of racquetball, a challenging educational lecture or an informal discussion in the weight room, it is our hope that the proposed University Recreation Center will come to be viewed by our students, faculty, staff, administration and guests as a hub of campus life, a place where the true spirit of community flourishes within the commitment to the development of the whole person.
