The Purple Ribbon Campaign is an awareness campaign about
the pervasive problem of domestic violence. People wear a purple
ribbon in remembrance of all women, children and men who have lost
their lives and to bring attention to the fact that many thousands continue
to live with abuse. The Women's Action Coalition of Nova Scotia initiated
the Purple Ribbon Campaign in 1990. The tradition continues at UNCW and
around the world during October, Domestic Violence Awareness month.
Take Back the Night is designed to empower individuals
in order to inspire the necessary action needed to end violence against
women. The event consists of a march and rally that includes speakers, music,
and a candlelight vigil. The first "Take Back the Night" originated
in Germany in 1973 and the tradition continues today across the United States.
Take Back the Night 2006 is scheduled for April 6.
Love Shouldn't Hurt is a collaborative project with Vintage Values, a re-sale shop that benefits the local Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, Inc., aimed at promoting healthy romantic relationships. This project is both an awareness effort and an on-campus drive for clothing and housewares for the shop; the first "Love Shouldn't Hurt" campaign was in February of 2003.
The Clothesline Campaign is a collective display of
tee shirts designed by victims, family members of victims, and friends of
victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Each shirt represents a
person who has struggled with abuse, assault and violence. Some of the shirts
date back to the 1980's, and new ones are added to the collection every
year.
