If You are Raped or Sexually Assaulted:
- Get to a safe place- one that is well lighted and where there are other people, preferrably people you know and trust.
- Do not bathe, douche, brush your teeth, drink, change clothing or even comb your hair before seeking medical attention. It's natural to want to do so, but you may be destroying physical evidence that could be needed later if you decide to prosecute.
- Call for help! People who care and who will provide you with support and information are available 24 hours a day at the Rape Crisis Center at 392-7460 or the C.A.R.E. office at 962-CARE. Staff members at both centers can help you consider your reporting options and decide what to do next.
- To report the assault, call University Police at 962-2222 or ext. 911 on campus. Reporting does not mean that you have to prosecute. Any student may also make an anonymous report of an assault to University Police, C.A.R.E., the Counseling Center, Student Health, Housing & Residential Life or the Office of the Dean of Students.
- Get immediate medical attention. Sometimes, victims have injuries of which they are unaware.
- If you wish, call a friend, family member, or other trusted person to be with you.
Remember:
- It is not your fault! Regardless of the circumstances, no one asks to be or deserves to be raped or sexually assaulted in any way.
- Preserve all physical evidence including all clothing and everything in the area where the assault occured.
- The choice to report or not report the assault is yours. C.A.R.E. staff or a Rape Crisis Center counselor will be available to advise you of your options. Reporting does not mean that you have to prosecute.
- Seek counseling where there is special expertise in working with rape and assault survivors, such as the Rape Crisis Center or the UNCW Counseling Center.
