High School Peer Education: History of "The CO-OP"

The University of North Carolina at Wilmington's substance abuse prevention and education department, Crossroads was the parent program to the CROSSROADS CO-OP program. With grant funding of $40,000.00 from the local Cape Fear Memorial Foundation, the CO-OP was piloted at New Hanover High School from August 1999 to May 2000. Over 4,000 student contacts were made in that year by the CO-OP program. At the end of that year our program evaluation results stated that 60% of the NHHS student population were aware of Crossroads CO-OP on their campus. And the information received from the CO-OP program and presentations affected them by: providing them with a better understanding of problems associated with alcohol, tobacco, and other drug (ATOD) use, 23%; helping them make better decisions regarding ATOD, 21%; and that they have shared the information about ATOD with other people, 14%.

CROSSROADS CO-OP went on to receive funding through the North Carolina's Governor's Crime Commission and continued with the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation. Now, the CO-OP is known as CROSSROADS Cooperative Drug Prevention Program and is the recipient of both a Phase I and Phase II STTR grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse totalling over $1 million dollars.
