Speak Up Week
Speak Up Against Bigoted Remarks!
Speak Up Week
January 28-February 1, 2008
As part of a campus wide initiative to "break down the hate" at UNCW, the Speak Up campaign from tolerance.org's "Ten Ways to Fight Hate" is a method used to raise awareness to issues surrounding bigoted remarks and/or actions.. and hopefully contribute to a more accepting climate on our campus. |
Speak Up Awareness week will be held the week of January 28-February 1st. However the spirit of "speak up" will be felt throughout the entire semester through related programming/campaigning. We will keep you updated as things become more concrete! Please email us with any ideas or suggestions!! We hope this will become an ongoing and collective effort...
Schedule of events for “Speak Up” Week:
All Week:
Come to our tables inside Fisher to learn how to speak up in specific, everyday situations such as at work, with friends, with family, etc. Also, sign a pledge to Speak Up!
Monday January 28th:
Free candy! Be on the lookout for students around campus passing out candy and handouts that will answer questions such as:
What is a bigoted remark?

Why should I speak up?
Tuesday and Wednesday January 29th and 30th:
Take a look into the lives of others; Chancellor’s Walk will be home to the “Power of Words” showcase. Telling the stories of those personally affected by bigoted remarks, we can take a closer look at the power of our own words and the significance of speaking up.

UNCW Diversity Posters will be unveiled! (The location and time is to be announced.)
Make a free t-shirt at Wag! Between 5 and 8 pm we will be making t-shirts at tables outside of Wag Hall. Come by and make one for FREE!
