Hurricane Awareness for Commuter Students

For University of North Carolina at Wilmington Official Hurricane Information and Updates:

UNCW's beautiful coastal setting certainly makes it an attractive choice for students who are studying marine biology, and those that just enjoy the beach! Unfortunately, this same location makes Wilmington a prime target for an occasional hurricane or tropical storm. The best way to "weather" a storm of this nature is to be prepared! If you are a commuter student who lives in Wilmington during the school year, but whose family lives elsewhere, the following information will be helpful:

  • Hurricane season starts June 1 and ends November 30 each year.
  • Review the university's Official Hurricane Policy. Here you will learn what you need to do as a student during the Hurricane Watch, Warning, and Mandatory Evacuation phases.
  • Check out this website offered by the Wilmington Star News. There is lots of valuable information, and even a pocket hurricane awareness guide you can print out and keep.
  • If you have additional questions about UNCW's hurricane procedures, contact the Office of the Dean of Students at 910-962-3119.
