SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

Welcome Reception for Military Veterans and Military Spouses

On Friday, August 22, campus faculty and staff will host a Welcome Reception for students who are military veterans and military spouses.  This reception is scheduled in conjunction with Welcome Week and will be held from 3 until 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Fisher Student Center in the Clock Tower Lounge and Veranda. Light appetizers and soft drinks will be provided.  We hope that all students who have served or who are currently serving in our armed services and students who are military spouses will join us for this event.

UNCW faculty and staff who are veterans, the spouses of military service members, or those who have an interest in helping military veterans at UNCW are encouraged to attend the reception and to serve as the official hosts for student veterans.

The goal is to help military veterans, particularly veterans who are new to UNCW, find connections with one another.  It is also hoped that all military veterans at UNCW will be reminded that their service to our country is valued.

If you have questions about this event, please contact Elaine Hogan, hoganw@uncw.edu

PED 101 Waiver for UNCW Military
Students who are currently serving in the U.S. military and veterans who served for two or more years will receive a waiver for PED 101 at UNCW. Students should be instructed to provide a military transcript to the Admissions office with their application to UNCW, or to the Registrar’s office if they have already been admitted.

Many military veterans also receive elective credit hours for Basic Training, depending on their transcripts. These transcripts are available to Army veterans from the following website: http://aarts.army.mil and for Navy and Marines from the following website: https://www.navycollege.navy.mil/ (click on Smart College Credit).

In August, 2006, the Registrar’s Office and the Health and Applied Human Sciences Department agreed to automatically grant a waiver for PED 101 for military veterans. This is included in the 2007-2008 UNCW Catalogue on page 116.Students do not have to report to the HAHS Department. They only need to present the transcript to the Admissions Office when they apply or to the Registrar if they are already enrolled. Awarding of credit hours as recommended by the American Council on Education should also be granted, though this varies for each branch of the military. Please help other students to understand we do not actually award credit for the PED 101, the waiver just fulfils that graduation requirement. However, we do award the hours ACE recommends as general elective credit that will go toward the 124 semester hours needed to graduate.

  UNCW's Rich Military History

UNCW students look on as UNCW faculty member, soprano Nancy King, performs with the U.S. Marine color guard during a Veterans Day rememberance in 2005.Did you know that when Wilmington College (later re-named UNCW) first opened its doors on September 4, 1947, seventy-five percent of the 238 students were veterans? Read more about our rich military history HERE.

If you are a student, faculty or staff member with a military connection, the following services and programs may be of assistance to you.  Documenting the Stories of our Veterans

World War II: Through the Eyes of the Cape Fear is a joint project between the University of North Carolina's William M. Randall Library and the Cape Fear Museum. The World War II experience was pervasive in the lives of people connected to or now living in Southeastern North Carolina. If you know a WWII vet and would like to arrange to have an interviewer document their story, contact Randall Library at 910.962.3271. To read transcripts or view video clips of local WWII veterans' stories, visit http://capefearww2.uncwil.edu/voices/voices.html.

The U.S. Library of Congress Veterans History Project relies on volunteers to collect and preserve stories of wartime service. Stories can be told through personal narratives (audio and video-taped interviews, written memoirs), correspondence and visiual materials. The project's primary focus is on first-hand accounts of U.S. Veterans from the following wars: World War I (1914-1920), World War II (1939-1946), Korean War (1950-1955), Vietnam War (1961-1975), Persian Gulf War (1990-1995), and Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts (2001-present). To learn how you or someone you love can contribute their story, visit http://www.loc.gov/vets/kit.html.
