- Values Awareness for Group- USA Hockey Team
- Group Reflection
- Ask the following question that are on a beach ball thrown around the group:
- What are your strengths while working in a group?
- What are your weaknesses while working in a group?
- What is something that you value within a group?
- What do you want to get out being a part of this group?
- How is your group viewed on campus and in the larger community?
- Values Clarification within a group
A. Puzzle activity and discussion
- Write down the thing that you value the most while working in a group.
- Example: I value a good leader because it leads to team unity.
- Puzzle activity discussion
- What did we assemble?
- Why is this a significant representation (or is it?)?
- What do the differing or similar values mean to you?
Why are some of the values the same or different while being in a group?
- If you had to put all of these into one statement to represent the entire group’s values, what would it say?
- Team Charter:
- Serves as a contract between the team and the sponsor
- Defines objectives and intent of the team - assures a common objective among team members
Defines the work effort and its intended results to the rest of the program
- Keeps the team focused - allows the team to determine if its activity is relevant and on-track or off on a tangent.
- Defines boundary conditions and helps the team determine when to raise an issue
- Helps control scope of team's efforts and re-negotiate its objectives or boundary condition
- Group Scruples
- Scruples cards are passed around (groups of 3-4 people) with a group situation and a possible action that can be taken. There is no right answer. The reasoning is important.
- Members of the group explain how they view the situation
- Ask the questions:
- Do values change depending on the group?
- Is it more likely that an individual group member will not go with the rest of the group or is there usually conformity?
- Is it easy to go against the grain of the group? Would you?
.
Values at UNCW
A. How do your values affect the people within the UNCW campus community and within your group? Illustrate using the waves. (Super sea hawk)
B. Review the question: How do you think your group is viewed on campus and in the larger community?
C. Cornerstone statement
- Quote/Read together cornerstone line by line starting with
- Pick three lines and ask the members of the group how it applies to them.
- If you were to replace the word “I” with “we”, would this still hold true for your group? Does everyone feel that the group represents this as a whole at UNCW? Why or why not?
- Motto of the school: Discere Aude. Explain the colors of UNCW (Yellow: Sand, Teal: Ocean, Blue: Deep Ocean). How do you make waves?
- Drawing on Coordinator’s own experiences: Team vs. Individual (can include the story of the flock of birds)
- Team: A group on the same side, a group organized to work together, a brood or flock.
Individual: By or for one person, existing as a distinct entity
- Review the question: What do you want to get out of being a part of this group?
- Evaluation
- The Owl- (There is an owl on campus somewhere. Use your group member’s skills and knowledge to locate it and email us where you found it. Explain how you used each other’s strengths and weaknesses.)
