What is Values Education?

The name “Values Education” can be a bit misleading.  The story of Michelangelo and the Statue of David best explains what this program represents.  Michelangelo began to work on his statue and would work all day long and late into the night just chiseling away at the stone.  One of his neighbors watched him do this every single day and was in complete awe of what was forming before his eyes.  One day this neighbor approached Michelangelo and asked him, “How do you do it?  This statue is amazing; you can see every muscle and every vain.  It is so life like and so beautiful, please tell me how you did it.”  Michelangelo turned to the man and said, “All I did was extract what was already in the stone.  I just brought it out.”  Values Education was not created to tell one what their values should be because we know that everyone already has a set of values that they live by everyday.  It is a program that has been designed to bring these values out and to provide thought provoking discussions and activities to engage the students into discovering more about themselves and their values.  There are several presentations that have been created to discuss these values in a variety of settings such as within a group, a relationship, or individual growth.
