Outpatient medical services are available to UNCW students in the following areas:
Students may walk-in without an appointment and be seen on a first-come/first-serve basis for most problems. This allows students to get same day care for most illnesses and injuries; however, there may be a wait to see a provider during peak hours (11am-2 pm). Generally, mornings are less busy and the best time to come in to be seen Routine Visits - What To Expect The SHC staff is eager to assist you in making your visit as comfortable as possible. You are encouraged to ask questions or request assistance whenever needed. Visits at the SHC start with sign-in at the registration desk in the lobby of the SHC. You must present your UNCW student ID upon arrival. An additional scantron form must be completed at each visit for statistical purposes. First visits may take longer due to the assembly of your official medical record/chart. After the medical record has been prepared, a nurse will call you to a check-in room. The nurse will briefly assess your needs, take a brief history, and record your vital signs. You will be escorted to the first available examination room to see a provider. Additional questions may be asked pertaining to your general health, past medical history and family history. Questions may be asked about sleep patterns, diet, exercise, work duties, sexual activity, contraception, and the use of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs. A physical exam, ranging from brief to complete, will be done by the provider. Lab tests, treatment, or procedures may be recommended. You will be informed of the cost associated with these, how to obtain results, and the plan for follow-up. The provider or nurse will give final instructions regarding your visit before check out. If costs are incurred, payment may be made at the pharmacy/cashier by cash, check, credit card, UNCW One Card, or on the student account. A copy of the charge with medical insurance codes will be provided for insurance reimbursement upon request. Individual visits vary in length. Please allow a minimum of one hour. The allows for registration, check-in, medical history taking, physical examination, laboratory tests, treatments, fillingprescription , and check out. Appointments are scheduled for:
All students with appointments should be present 15 minutes prior to their appointment time. Students who present 15 minutes or more past their scheduled appointment time may be asked to reschedule. Call 962-3280 to schedule an appointment. Students who cannot keep an appointment should call and cancel. NOTE: Students must present their student ID each time they come to the SHC to receive care. Students with urgent health care needs, especially those with problems of severe or sudden onset, that require immediate care are encouraged to come to the Student Health Center (SHC) as soon as possible. Students with urgent health problems that occur when the SHC is closed can speak directly with a registered nurse (RN) at the New Hanover Health Network. To access this service, call Vitaline at (910) 332-8021. NOTE: In case of a life-threatening emergency call, an on campus assistance call, or off campus assistance call dial 911. For serious medical emergencies, you are advised to go to the nearest hospital emergency department. The hospital emergency department closest to campus is located at Cape Fear Hospital, 5301 Wrightsville Avenue, Wilmington, NC 28403. (910-452-8100). All hospital emergency room, inpatient, and community urgent care facility fees are your financial responsibility. Emergency services, those required for life-threatening conditions, are not provided by the health center. Anyone arriving at the health center requiring emergency medical attention will be cared for until an appropriate emergency response unit arrives. Students receive diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up for general medical needs. While the SHC has many services, there are some medical needs which may need to be referred. Students will be referred for hospitalization and specialty care. All costs associated with care provided by outside providers are the financial responsibility of the student. A range of preventive services are available, including: screenings for blood cholesterol and elevated blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, occult blood (stool), sickle cell trait, tuberculosis, and instruction on self breast exam (SBE) and self testicular exam (STE). Evaluations and consultations are available for nutrition, alcohol use, tobacco use, illicit drug use, and sexual health. Allergy injections and immunizations are available as below. Allergy injection administration is available for students receiving treatment for chronic allergic conditions. The allergy program utilizes registered nurses, with oversight by a physician, with a provider available at all times for consultation and emergencies. Students receiving allergy injections must provide serum and have their prescribing physician complete the SHC Physician Order Form before scheduling an interview, in order to see if they qualify to receive allergy injections at the SHC. The SHC allergy program allows for administration of routine, uncomplicated allergy injections. Requests for complicated, specialized allergy regimens will be facilitated by referral to a local allergy specialist's office. Students needing allergy injections should make an appointment with an allergy nurse for an initial consultation and instructions. Allergy injections are administered by appointment. Call 910-962-3280 to schedule an appointment. Students must always wait 20 minutes after receiving any injection to be observed for an adverse reaction. NOTE: Allergy injections are provided at an additional charge. Immunizations or vaccinations are available for several preventable illnesses including bacterial meningitis, influenza, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, human papilloma virus (HPV), and tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis. Tuberculosis screening (TB skin testing) is also available. Immunizations are provided on a walk-in basis. NOTE: Immunizations are provided for an additional charge. The SHC offers men the Health Risk Assessment Exam which includes assesment for heart disease, kidney disease, and cancer. Diseases specific to males at various stages of life are also considered. Included in this evaluation is blood work and a urinalysis to screen for diabetes and elevated lipids (cholesterol). There is a nominal charge for this exam. For information, or to schedule an appointment call 962-3280. Our health providers perform annual exams, diagnose and treat many gynecologic problems, provide testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, offer contraceptive counseling and methods, and provide pregnancy testing and counseling. Health Promotion staff teach a one-hour Women's Health Seminar in the Student Health Center. Young women who are having their first annual exam/Pap smear, or who have not been on birth control previously, are requested to attend a Seminar prior to their appointment for annual examination. Appointments may be made by calling 962-3280. If you already have an appointment to get an annual exam, you can save time by completing our Annual Health Patient Information Form (PDF)and bringing it with you to your appointment. If there is an urgent problem (for example, pain, unexplained bleeding or urinary tract infection), please come to the SHC as early as possible. HPV vaccine (Gardasil) is now available at the SHC. See the information on HPV vaccine under the Immunizations section. Note: There are additional charges over and above the health fee for some of these services. Sexual Health / STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) Testing The SHC offers a variety of services in areas of sexuality, including health education, counseling, medical testing, and medical treatment. Testing is available in the SHC for common STI’s. If you have symptoms that might be due to an STI, or if you believe you have been exposed to an STI, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. In addition, we encourage all persons who are sexually active (even without symptoms) to undergo STI testing on a regular basis. An STI, if undetected and untreated, can cause serious health problems for you and your partner(s). The cost of testing is small; the peace of mind and prevention of the spread of disease from testing is huge. The U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) and infectious disease experts recommend that Americans between the ages of 13 and 64 be routinely tested for HIV. Routine testing would catch infections earlier, making treatment more effective, plus help stop the spread of HIV. The CDC recommends that HIV testing be as common as a cholesterol check. HIV Testing is available at the SHC for $15. For HIV/STI testing, please come to the SHC in the early morning hours, prior to 10 am, to make test collection as quick and easy as possible. Do not urinate for one hour prior to coming to the SHC. If you come at in at 4pm or after for routine testing (no symptoms), we’ll likely ask you to come back the next day (testing collection and sending to an outside lab is time consuming). To save time on your visit, Click here to download the SHC HIV/STI Testing Pre-test Survey/Counseling sheet and Click here to download the SHC HIV Testing Information sheet. You can fill out the survey and bring it to the SHC to save time. The survey does not need your name on it, nor does it go in your chart/permanent medical record. Our Health Promotion department also provides information and education on sexual health and STI’s. Call 962-4137 or go the the Health Promotion office at the recreation center to receive written information, one-on-one counseling, or to see a schedule of sexuality seminars.
The SHC offers physical examinations to students for preventive care, as well as for nursing students, students in teaching internships, and incoming athletes. Click to download an athletic physical form, or a nursing-teaching history form. The laboratory provides a wide range of medical laboratory services. Many diagnostic laboratory tests are performed on site for immediate results. Outside reference lab facilities are also used when needed. All reference laboratory tests charges are reduced. All laboratory tests performed at the SHC must first be ordered by a SHC provider. Some tests require that the individual not eat or drink anything except water for a period of time. Other tests may require dietary restrictions. Ask about any special instructions prior to laboratory testing and follow the instructions for accurate results. Some lab tests can be done immediately, while others have specific time requirements that cannot be altered. Students should be prepared to wait if testing is done immediately. Health care providers will instruct students on obtaining results. Staff members are available to make presentations on a broad range of topics throughout the University community and act as a resource for students, staff, and faculty. The SHC also provides a comprehensive list of self-care sheets, which are for educational purposes and should not be used to treat or diagnose an illness. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) The SHC does not normally diagnose and treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Students interested in evaluation, treatment, or prescription refills for ADHD should go to the UNCW Counseling Center. The Counseling Center can provide initial evaluation and referral to community providers for evaluation of ADHD. The Counseling Center can also provide referrals for ongoing treatment and prescription refills for those with already-diagnosed ADHD. |
