We want you to feel at home here in Residence Life, because it is your home for the next 9 months, but remember that above all, UNCW is a "Community of Scholars" where academics are expected to be your TOP priority. Feel free to bring those things that will help make this "home" as long as they fit and are allowable.
All items listed below are available in Wilmington, so you don't have to pack & move them from home. Many of these may be divided up between roommates for space and economic reasons.
WHAT TO BRING
- Bedding-- Bedspread/comforter, Sheets (extra long*) & pillowcases (*Mattress size -- 36" x 80")
- Pillow(s)
- Blanket
- Mattress Pad (extra long, if fitted)
- Bath/Beach towels
- Personal Grooming items (soap, shampoo, conditioner, etc.)
- Prescription medication (you might want to coordinate with Health Services)
- Laundry supplies & hamper, basket, or laundry bag
- Raincoat & umbrella
- Telephone (one per bedroom), cordless phones are not recommended
- Alarm Clock
- Waste basket
- Hangers
- Flashlight
- Backpack, classroom supplies (pens, pencils, paper, calculator, etc.)
- Multi-plug power strips with built-in circuit breaker for electronics and appliances
- Storage bins, crates, etc.
- Iron, curling iron (preferably with auto shut-off feature)
- Shower curtain to use as a closet covering (Belk, Cornerstone, Galloway, Graham, Hewlett, and Schwartz)
- Microwave, coffee pot, air popcorn poppers
- Plates, silverware, cups
- Small Refrigerator
(Rent from UNCW or bring your own & purchase a Refrigerator User Decal from Housing and Residence Life Office) - Photos & room decorations to make this your own space (see restrictions below)
- Posters & supplies for hanging them (ONLY allowable items for
hanging: In Galloway, Graham, Hewlett, Belk, Schwartz, Suites--Scotch
tape, Putty, Poster Mounts, Removable mounts;
In Apartments, Honors, International--Straight pins, push pins) - Television & cable cord
- Stereo, CD player, radio
- Personal computer, printer & cords (Optional--there are a lot of computers on campus if you don't have your own)
- Lamp, desk lamp
- Small supply of dishes, flatware & microwavable cookware
- Beach chair or other fold up furniture
- Bicycle & U-bolt lock (Bikes must be stored outside, except in the Apts. & Suites, so don't get an expensive bike, and always keep bike securely locked to a bike rack.)
- MOST IMPORTANTLY: Bring and open mind, positive attitude, willingness to meet new & different people, and to respect and be courteous of your neighbors!!!
ADDITIONAL ITEMS TO BRING IF YOU WILL BE LIVING IN AN APARTMENT
- Cleaning supplies--cleaning products, toilet bowl brush, broom, dust pan, small vacuum, etc.
- Toilet Paper
- Plunger
- Personal phone (each resident has his/her own phone line)
- Shower curtain for dressing area just outside shower
- In Apartments without kitchen counter storage, you may want a metal or plastic shelving unit
WHAT NOT TO BRING
- Halogen lamps, lava lamps
- Double-sided sticky tape
- Nails, hooks, etc. for walls
- Any decorations, shelves, framed pictures, etc. that are too heavy to be held up with the acceptable fasteners (tape on cinderblock walls & push pins on drywall)
- Any of the following electrical appliances: George Foreman grills, deep fryers, electric skillets, oil popcorn poppers, toasters, toaster ovens, or any other electrical appliance with open coils or flames
- Space Heaters
- Ceiling fans or track lighting
- Extension cords
- Pets (except fish in clean tanks, 20 gallon or less)-- NOT EVEN FOR A BRIEF VISIT!
- Candles (including all decorative candles with wicks, incense, oil lamps or any other items that have an open flame)
- Weapons of any kind (including decorative items, knives or martial arts, paintball guns, airguns, etc.--NC General Statute)
- Alcohol and other drug related items (including cans/bottles, empty or full; posters, lights, boxes, etc.)
- Stolen road/traffic signs, cones, etc.
- Fireworks
- Gas grills
- Fabric, metal, paper or other wall hangings that cover over 50% of any wall
- Clotheslines
- Amplified guitars, drum sets, any other loud music instrument & sound systems
- Any items that do not fit into your room/suite/apartment--NO university furniture can be removed from the room/suite/apartment, it cannot be stacked, and there is NO Storage available on campus
- Answering machine (individual Voice Mail is provided for all residents at no cost)
- Wireless Routers (these devices interfere with our network and will be disabled)
