The Center for Leadership Education and Service is excited to annouce our new Leadership UNCW program! Many of these workshops are already sponsored and presented by other offices and departments at UNCW. Leadership UNCW seeks to bring together existing opportunities for leadership education across campus, creating a central resource for students to connect with these opportunities and earn additional recognition for their participation in leadership development programs at UNCW.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What workshops count as elective workshops?
Most workshops and programs can count as elective workshops. These include Leadership UNCW workshops, student conference sessions, UNCW Presents' Leadership Lecture Series, and more! If you have questions about leadership workshops/trainings/programs that you have attended, contact us to see if they will count as electives. Written reflections are required for all elective workshops/programs.
Can a workshop required for one certificate count as an elective workshop for a different certificate?
Yes! However, the four foundation workshops required for the Leadership UNCW Certificate in Personal Leadership do NOT count as elective workshops.
I participated in a leadership conference or other leadership workshop earlier this semester. Can previous sessions attended count towards a Leadership UNCW Certificate requirement?
Sessions attended at leadership conferences this year (i.e., Value of Peer Education Conference, Student Organization Leadership Conference, etc.) can be approved as meeting a required or elective workshop on a case-by-case basis. Please contact Jenn Smist for approval.
Why is a written reflection required for each workshop?
Reflections provide you with a structured opportunity to process what you learned and think of ways to apply new skills and knowledge. Written reflections for Leadership UNCW certificate programs are brief (200-300 words). It is suggested that you complete them within two weeks of the workshop/program while the material is still fresh in your mind. These reflections also provide verification of your participation, as well as an informal qualitative assessment of what students learn during these workshops and programs.
How do I submit written reflections?
All reflections should be written in paragraph form and submitted via email to Jenn Smist, either within the text of the email or as a MS Word file attachment. Reflections should be 200-300 words in length and should address what you learned from participating in the specific workshop and what you plan to do in the future to apply what you learned.
How do I submit my completed community service hours?
Complete the Individual Experiential Learning Record and submit your completed form directly to Jenn Smist in the Center for Leadership Education and Service. Check the "community service" box and complete the rest of the form with the details of your community service. Feel free to document more than the required number of hours, if applicable.
Five hours of community service are required to complete the certificate in Personal Leadership.
An additional 10 hours of community service are required to complete the certificate in Civic and Community Engagement.
What will I receive for completing all requirements for a Leadership UNCW Certificate?
Upon successfully completing all of thee requirements for any Leadership UNCW Certificate, you will receive a formal letter of recognition within one month. All students will be publicly recognized for the accomplishments in earning a Leadership UNCW Certificate on this website and at the annual Cornerstone Student Awards Ceremony in April.
