AUTISM S.T.A.R. SUMMER PROGRAM
Contact: Brittany Holt, STAR Coordinator at 336-687-5490, BrittanyMHolt@yahoo.com.
Applications are due no later than April 30th, 2008.
We need your help implementing the Autism S.T.A.R. Summer Program. The Autism S.T.A.R. Program provides a positive, fun outlet, filled with activities to maintain and develop new social skills for children with autism. One major goal is the retention of social skills and the transition back into the school setting in the Fall. This is where children with autism struggle the most when returning to school.
As a volunteer, your help is very valuable. You will be working with a community needing your help and we hope you gain personal satisfaction from being part of this project in our community. In addition, especially if you have interest in education and/or special education or any other field impacting the lives of children, a child with autism will undoubtedly be something you will encounter. Through this experience you will be better equipped to support this special-needs population.
The program will cover Pitt and surrounding counties. The program will be 6 consecutive weeks (June 16 – July 25, 2008). Depending on the number of children, we may have concurrent sessions at two different locations (i.e., Greenville and Kinston). We are looking for volunteers to fill time slots as followed; Mondays and Wednesdays; 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and/or 1-4 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays; 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and/or 1 – 4 p.m. This totals approximately 60, 3-hours time slots available!! There is no required maximum number of time slots per volunteer, however, research shows the more time an individual providing support with continuity to an individual with autism, the better the results. So the more you can do the better!!!
We will provide specialized training on children with autism, free of charge to you from Greenville TEACCH, a local program specializing in providing support to individuals with autism. This training will also look great on your resume for community involvement!!!
Without the volunteer support, we will not be able to run the program!!

Kids with progressive neuromuscular diseases look forward to the MDA summer camp year-round. Campers get to experience a world in which all indoor adn outdoor activities are specially adapted to their abilities. Many counselors come back to camp year after year.
