Joy & Justice: An Invitation to the Young to Serve the Children of the Poor
Monday, Feb 15 at 7 p.m., Kenan Auditorium
The talk is co-sponsored by UNCW Student Media and the Office of International Programs and will be followed by a book signing.
Always on the forefront of social reform, Jonathan Kozol has spent over four decades in devotion to mending the racial inequalities in the education system, especially among America’s youth. Kozol’s work relies heavily on comparisons between rich and poor public systems, in terms of how much money is spent per child, and illuminates the injustice of the fact that where a child is born can play a large role in the education he or she receives.
A graduate of Harvard University and recipient of a Rhodes Scholarship, Kozol became a fourth grade teacher in a poor black neighborhood in Boston amid the passion of the civil rights campaigns of 1964 and 1965. Now regarded as a classic by educators, Death at an Early Age, his description of his first year as a teacher, was published in 1967 and received the 1968 National Book Award.
The recipient of two Guggenheim Fellowships and twice a fellow of the Rockefeller Center, Kozol has authored over a dozen books, including Savage Inequalities: Children in America’s Schools, the critically acclaimed follow-up to Death at an Early Age. In his most recent work, Letters to a Young Teacher, Kozol draws upon his four decades of experience to guide the newest generation of our nation's teachers into the ethically complicated challenges but, also, "the sheer joy and passionate rewards” of what he calls a “beautiful profession.”
Jonathan Kozol will be interviewed for UNCW TV by Dr. David Weber, professor of Communication Studies, from 3:00-3:45 pm in the UNCW Production Studio, Leutze Hall, room 125. The public is free to observe, though studio seating is limited and registration is required. Please RSVP to artsinaction@uncw.edu.
