Update from the Wilmington Police Department:
October 6, 2009
Due to recent calls related to door-to-door vendors we wanted to share this information with everyone now rather than wait to put it in the upcoming monthly newsletter.
Companies that employ door-to-door salesman tend to attract those with various criminal histories. The companies themselves may not be criminal in nature but some of their employees may take advantage of their transient occupation and commit crimes while they are in the area. Suggestions when purchasing products from these sales representatives include:
- DO NOT talk to them inside of your residence. (It's easier for people to steal things if they know where to find them.)
- DO NOT pay with check or credit card. (This will help prevent fraud.)
- DO NOT answer any personal questions. (Please remind your children NOT to speak to or give personal information to strangers.)
- By law, citizens can ask for a driver's license or state identification card, and the sales person should provide it to you. (Know who you are speaking with.)
- Citizens can ask for a sales person's privilege license which they should have in their possession and show to you upon request. The privilege license must be appropriate to the area they are working. If they are in the county outside of the city limits, they must have a county license. If they operate within the city limits, they must have a city license. One cannot be replaced with the other.
Finally, call law enforcement if you feel the sales person is acting suspicious or refuses to provide you with identification and/or a privilege license, or if you become aware of crimes occurring in your neighborhood after their arrival. If the sales person is in a vehicle write down a vehicle description and tag number.
Sincerely,
Lt. Kathy Cochran, District Commander
WPD SE Patrol Division
