Sometime this year, the State Auditors will visit UNCW in an effort to perform an audit of our operational facilities and systems. Although much of the focus will be on the automated systems used by the campus as a whole and the operational components of ITSD, the State of
There is a major difference between the Disaster Recovery Plans and Considerations developed in conjunction with ITSD and an Enterprise Business continuity Plan or EBCP. Disaster Plans are designed to assist in recovery of electronic systems in the event of a disaster. An EBCP is a detailed plan that insures the “continuation” of the day-to-day business of a department, service area, organization or business. This includes the following items:
- A description of the department/ office/service area and its purpose
- A detailed description of who the Continuity Team Members are
- A detailed description of all essential files, ledgers, etc and where they can be found
- Identification of an Operations Manual and Standards and Procedures Manual and where these may be found
- Identification of essential equipment and a detailed description of such equipment and what it is used for.
- Alternate operational sites or provisions in the event the current office complex becomes inaccessible.
- A Risk Analysis that details the level of risk associated with the loss of operation of the particular office/ department/ service area
- An IT related disaster recovery plan is usually attached to the EBCP
If a service area uses any files or applications that are housed on a “client side” PC, or a PC located within the office space and assigned to an individual, then the following items must also be included in the plan:
- A detailed identification and description of the PC hardware
- A detailed description of the essential files
- A detailed description of the essential applications
- Identification of any application manuals associated with the software or application and where they may be found.
According to audit policies, a copy of the Disaster Recovery Plan and the EBCP must be kept within the individual office at the service area level, all service area plans combined into a departmental level plan and then all departmental level plans into a Division level plan, each signed off on by the head of each area. In addition, copies of all plans must be kept in an alternate location (in this case within the Student Affairs Office of Technology). For guidance in developing an EBCP, click here.
A series of forms have been designed to assist in the development of these plans. They may be found at the following link:
