Enterprise Continuity Planning

Sometime this year, the State Auditors will visit UNCW in an effort to perform an audit of our operational facilities and systems. Although much of the focus will be on the automated systems used by the campus as a whole and the operational components of ITSD, the State of North Carolina requires that all State Offices maintain both a Disaster Recovery Plan and an Enterprise Business continuity Plan (NC State Definitions).

There is a major difference between the Disaster Recovery Plans and Considerations developed in conjunction with ITSD and an Enterprise Business continuity Plan or EBCP. Disaster Plans are designed to assist in recovery of electronic systems in the event of a disaster. An EBCP is a detailed plan that insures the “continuation” of the day-to-day business of a department, service area, organization or business. This includes the following items:

If a service area uses any files or applications that are housed on a “client side” PC, or a PC located within the office space and assigned to an individual, then the following items must also be included in the plan:

According to audit policies, a copy of the Disaster Recovery Plan and the EBCP must be kept within the individual office at the service area level, all service area plans combined into a departmental level plan and then all departmental level plans into a Division level plan, each signed off on by the head of each area. In addition, copies of all plans must be kept in an alternate location (in this case within the Student Affairs Office of Technology). For guidance in developing an EBCP, click here.

A series of forms have been designed to assist in the development of these plans. They may be found at the following link:
