Sustainability in Campus Life Facilities

 

CAMPUS LIFE BUILDING SERVICE STRATEGIC PLAN - SUSTAINABILITY

Campus Life Building Services Strategic Goal 2007-08:

Strategy:  Develop and implement a comprehensive plan that focuses on sustainability in Campus Life Facilities and Services operations.

University/Student Affairs goals supporting this strategy:

  • I.  Creating the most powerful learning experience possible for our students
  • IV.  Create an educational environment that prepares our students to be global citizens
  • VI.  Enhance the quality of UNCW’s environment and provide a campus that is attractive, functional and above all, safe.

Planned assessment of departmental strategies:

  • Develop and implement data tracking for the following:
    • Recycling – types and amounts recycled - thus amounts saved from landfill
    • Types and quantity of recycled products used - thus resources saved
    • Utilities expenses and quantities used
    • Cost savings- short term, and over the life of a product or piece of equipment
    • Design aspects of buildings – impact, cost and resources savings
  • Monitor and record other aspects of sustainable operations
    • Low-toxicity products used
    • Energy saving devices used/installed
    • Green initiatives from other groups
  • Develop new initiatives
    • Partner with facilities residents (Aramark, Bookstore, Green Transportation Center, Housekeeping, etc.)
  • Review and apply LEED standards/tracking to building operations
  • Communicate:
    • Environmental benefits
    • Economic benefits
    • Health benefits
    • Efficiency benefits
    • Leading the efforts on campus benefits
  • Monitor feedback about initiatives
    • Is anyone noticing?

Resources needed:

  • Participation throughout all Campus Life facilities
  • Student staff intern or position dedicated to tracking analyzing and communicating sustainability efforts. 
  • LEED For Existing Buildings Reference Guide
  • Institutional and Divisional support for such efforts
  • Seed funding for additional efforts
