The University of North Carolina at Wilmington received funding from Glaxo Wellcome Foundation and the Environmental Protection Agency for a three-year environmental education program entitled, Students as Scientists: Pollution Prevention Through Education. This program is sponsored by UNCW's Science and Mathematics Education Center and Watson School of Education and is a collaboration of UNCW, UNC Charlotte and Western Carolina University. Students as Scientists focuses on water quality issues related to North Carolina Rivers.    To compare data from participating schools across North Carolina, click on the water droplets below.

Western Carolina is in the mountainous region of the stateUNCC is in the central piedmontUNCW is located on the eastern coast

Dr. Richard Huber, UNCW Watson School of Education, and Mrs. Karen Shafer, UNCW Science and Mathematics Education Center, are co-project investigators. Dr. Jo Wallace, UNC Charlotte, and Dr. Ralph DeVane, Western Carolina Univesity, are project directors at their respective sites.

Teachers participating in this program learn how to test several water parameters. They take this knowledge back to their classrooms, instruct their students in water testing and then the students perform these tests. Afterwards, students compare their results to those of environmental scientists and to the results of their counterparts at the other statewide sites. They may also browse through the internet for further information to sites such as The NC Divison of Water Quality. The site also includes a map of the major NC river basins.
