Carbon-Less Commute, Fisher Student Center Information Desk
Lessen your carbon footprint on the environment by committing to walking or biking around campus, carpooling to work, and utilizing public transportation.  Stop by the information table at the Fisher Student Center Information Desk to get some great tips and information on how you can start having a more positive impact on the environment

 

Sustainability Poster Contest, Submissions DUE on Tuesday, April 21, 2009
Submissions should be educational, creative, and memorable; stressing the importance of the environmental sustainability. Guidelines for the Poster: At least 18” x 24” but no bigger than 24” x 36”. Entry forms and complete information located at the service desk in each residential area or email taj6677@uncw.edu.

Blood Drive: Recycle Life, 10am-3:30pm, Warwick Center
Make a difference and “recycle life”.  Sign up to donate blood or volunteer for the event.  Sign-up tables will be located in various areas around campus leading up to the event.  Special thanks to the American Red Cross and the following collaborators: Center for Leadership Education and Service, Amnesty International, and Residence Hall Association.

 

Planet in Peril: Part 2, 7pm, Fisher Student Center - Lumina Theater
In "Planet in Peril," CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, CNN's chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and Animal Planet host and wildlife biologist Jeff Corwin take viewers around the globe for a two-part documentary on the threats to the world’s environment.

 
"Planet in Peril" was filmed in 13 countries, uncovering places where environmental change is not a theory or a future forecast but a crisis happening in real time. This event is sponsored by UNCW Presents and the Housing and Residence Life Sustainability Initiatives Committee. Discussion with UNCW faculty and staff will follow the movie.

 

Earth Day – Wednesday, April 22, 2009 – Earth Day

Earth Day Celebration: Sustainability Fair & Concert, 11am-2pm, Campus Commons (in front of Fisher Student Center)
It’s a commitment to social, economic, and environmental sustainability.  Organizations, departments, and business from the campus and Wilmington community are coming together to share information about how we can all be positive contributors all aspects of sustainability.  The band Blount Harvey, whose music is said to be “an eclectic blend of old school Hip-Hop, Soul, and Funk”, will be performing throughout the event. We look forward to seeing you at this spectacular event sponsored by the UNCW Sustainability Committee and Association for Campus Entertainment.

Some of the fair participants include: Cape Fear Green Building Alliance, NC GreenPower, Airlie Gardens, ECOteal, Algalita Foundation, Re-Align Technology, Housing and Residence Life Sustainability Initiatives Team, ITSD Green Team, UNCW Sustainability Committee, CLES, and more.

 

Disney’s Earth Movie, 7pm, Mayfaire Theater (Don’t forget to carpool!)
Walt Disney Studios celebrates Earth Day by releasing the movie Earth.   James Earl Jones it tells the story of three families -- animal families -- and their journeys on our planet Earth. The UNCW Sustainability Committee has partnered with Housing and Residence Life to rent out a theater in Mayfaire to offer this movie FREE to students and staff.  Tickets can be picked up at Sustainability Week events Sunday through Wednesday, but remember space is limited!

 

Victor Zullo Memorial Lecture, 7:00 pm, Computer Information Systems Building (CIS) Auditorium, room 1008:
Featuring Dr. David Fastovsky, world renowned paleontologist, from the University of Rhode Island. Sponsored by Dept of Geography and Geology. Topic: Catastrophic extinction of non-bird dinosaurs at the Cretaceous-Tertiary Boundary, 65 million years ago.

Locally Inspired Lunch, 11am-2pm, Wagoner Dining Hall
Campus Dining will prepare a lunch that has much of the menu chosen from local and close proximity producers/distributors in an effort to reduce the carbon impact on the food supply chain, all while showcasing the many products and foods that are a part of the southeast region. Advance lunch tickets can be purchased for $7.00 at any Campus Dining location. Co-sponsored by Housing and Residence Life.

 

Farmers Market, 11am-2pm, Campus Commons (in front of Fisher Student Center)
Health Promotion brings back the Farmer’s Market to provide fresh local fruits, vegetables, herbs, meats, and other products. Support the local economy and impact the environment.  Bring cash for all purchases.

 

Dr. Fastovsky, world renowned paleontologist, Professional Talk, 2:00 pm, Deloach Hall room 114: "The Day After (the Cretaceous-Tertiary asteroid) - apocalypse or silent spring?"
His research focuses on the paleoenvironments in which dinosaurs roamed and has taken him to dig sites from Mongolia to Montana to Mexico. he is the co-cuthor of the widely acclaiemd college-level textbook, The Evolution and Extinction of the Dinosaurs, published in 2005.

 

Happy Hour Goes Green 4-6pm Sharky’s Game Room
Back by popular demand, this weekly event sponsored by CROSSROADS has been retooled once again to highlight and showcase the many initiatives the UNCW community is doing to promote sustainability.  Join us for free games and our low carbon impact peanut butter and jelly sandwich bar.  You could win a cool t-shirt while there! Co-sponsored by Housing and Residence Life’s Green Team and Sustainability Committee.

Lunch and Learn, 12-1:30pm, Fisher Student Center – FUU Cape Fear Room (2019)
This presentation will discuss LEED Certification innovations that are being enacted throughout the Campus Life and Housing & Residence Life facilities. The chairpersons of the UNCW Sustainability Committee will be on hand to field questions about various initiatives happening across campus as well as hear your thoughts and suggestions on how to improve UNCW’s sustainability efforts. Bring your lunch with you!

 

Kickin’ Some Campus Butts, 2-4pm, Meet in front of Wag
Cigarette butt clean-up and storm water protection service day. Many toxins can be released into storm water runoff from improperly disposed cigarette butt; with the Cape Fear and UNCW Surfrider organization and UNCW Campus Tobacco Coalition, we’re cleaning up the UNCW community!

 

Sustainability Bingo, 6-8pm, Wagoner Dining Hall
Sustainability is a hot topic. Bingo is a fun game. Combine them both and you get an amazing night of fun and games with the opportunity to win amazing prizes that all relate to the promotion of sustainability. Prizes include: energy star products, DVD’s, Box Sets, Water filters, T-shirts and more! This event sponsored by UNCW Sustainability Committee, UNCWeekends, and Housing and Residence Life.

Do you love your clean beaches? Help keep them that way! Join us as we team up with Surfrider to clean up Carolina Beach! Enjoy free food and a local art show at the Carolina Beach Gazebo. Meet at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk!! Please carpool to this event! This event sponsored by Residence Hall Association and Cape Fear and UNCW Surfrider.

 

A.C.E. Spring Show featuring Citizen Cope, 7 pm
A.C.E. Presents the 2009 Spring Show featuring acclaimed recording artist, Citizen Cope, with Grammy-nominated Vanessa Carlton.  Tickets are on sale now at Sharky’s Game Room in the Fisher Student Center: 

$15 for UNCW Students in Advance, $20 day of. 
$20 for Faculty/Staff in Advance, $25 day of.
$25 for General Public Advance, $30 day of.
