Why Choose Social Work? | About | Admission Requirements Questions about the MSW Program? Many prospective students have questions about the new MSW program. You may findyour answers here, so please read this before you contact us. If you still needinformation, email us at socialwork@uncw.edu Q: How do I apply to the program? A: See our Web site, http://www.uncw.edu/swk/msw, for information on the MSW program,the UNCW Graduate School and the application process or The Graduate School handlesall application materials, so you will need to direct all communications about this tothem. Q: Is a specific score on the GRE required? A: No, although at least average scores will stand you in good stead. We will considerall aspects of an applicant’s background, and standardized testing is just one aspect. Q: Are some undergraduate majors (like social work) preferred? A: No, we welcome students with a diverse background, although we do require 20undergraduate credit hours of behavioral sciences courses. Q: What types of courses are included in “behavioral sciences”? A: These are courses in the following areas: anthropology, criminal justice, economics,geography, political science, psychology, social work, and sociology. Q: Can I apply if I do not have 20 hours of behavioral sciences? A: If you do not have the required course background, you must take supplemental postbaccalaureatecourses to meet this requirement. Choose courses in the disciplinesidentified above (particularly social work, psychology and sociology) and have the gradetranscript included in your application. Q: Is there financial aid? A: We will have financial assistance available for some of our students. Complete theuniversity forms that verify your need for assistance, and also check into loan programsand scholarships. Q: When is the application deadline? A: The deadline for August, 2006 admission is February 1. Q: Does work or volunteer experience in the human services influence admissions? A: While all applicants will be considered individually, if you have some background inhuman services through work, internships, or volunteer efforts your application will bestronger. Q: What should I include in my personal narrative? A: Try to give us a concise picture of who you are (your academic and personalexperiences) and why you are choosing social work as a career. Discuss your currentthoughts about what you would like to do with your MSW, although we know that thismay change as yo u go through the program. Remember that we will have manyapplicants, so the more clear and detailed you are about your history and goals the betterpicture we will have of you.
