  • March 29th: Winter Park Festival

Winterpark Elementary School is having a spring fling and needs people to help Face Paint, give out snow cones, run relay races, and help with booths.

  • April 19th: Hands on Wilmington

The fellows will be involved with construction projects around the Wilmington Area. The fellows will receive a free t-shirt and free lunch that day.

  • April 19th: Displace Me

We will be walking from the University of North Carolina Wilmington to downtown Wilmington to sleep in the streets.Walk and stay at River Front Park.

  • April 22, 2008: Luke Spooner Spina Bifida Basketball Fundraiser
  • Where: Roland Grise Middle School Gymnasium
  • Time: 4:30- 5:30 p.m  

Sponsored by the UNCW Teaching Fellows Freshmen and the Roland Grise Middle School Pen Pals, the fundraiser will raise money for the Spina Bifida Association as well as a Wilmington gentleman who has spina bifida and needs a new wheelchair.  During the fundraiser, there will be a basketball game, face painting, guitar hero competition, raffles and so much more.  You will have to pay on your own the entrance fee which is $2, but it goes to a great cause!!

(NOT an event for freshmen... it is a requirment!!!)

  • April 25th-26th: Relay for Life - Follow these instructions to register:

Visit www.newhanoverrelay.org and click on "On-line registration and participation" at the top of the page.  Next, click on team listing in the left hand column and find UNCW Teaching Fellows.  Click on join team and fill out the information to join.  You will need to set up a username and password along with your personal goal.  Set your goal higher than you think you need so that when people visit the site to donate money, they will be able to tell that you need more donations coming in.  See the Junior Class Spotlight page for further suggestions.

Conferences: 

  • March 18th: Forum on the African American Male

The Watson School of Education and the Department of Social Work will host a forum on March 18th.  The forum will focus on research and best practices on the advancement of the African American male. This forum is also linked to the establishment of a center for the study of the African American male at UNCW. If interested contact Amy.

2008 Carolina Collegiate Conference on Sustainability

Awareness of sustainable living is changing the way we go about our daily activities. The Student Government Association of UNCW is hosting a conference for students from all across the state in an effort to encourage discussion on the topic. The inaugural Carolina Collegiate Conference on Sustainability will focus on ways for students to help their campuses and communities become more sustainable for future generations.

Cathe Hooks will discuss grant writing and present exceptional ideas for lesson planning.

  • April 18th - 20th: Washington D.C.  

We are going on a road trip!!  We plan to leave Friday around 10:00 and return Sunday afternoon.  During our stay in D.C. we will visit the Boys and Girls Home, visit the various museums, and catch a play.  Food and hotel will be paid for, but while in D.C. you will have to pay for your own food. When return to UNCW, you will then be reimbursed for your food purchases.  You will also have to pay for the play ticket, but they are only $10.00... such a deal.   We only have 23 slots, so first come first serve. I will need to have all the people interested in going by Tuesday April 1st. Hope you can come!!!

Recruitment: 

  • March 1st: Speaking with Transfer Students-Transfer To Teal

 We need two people to represent the Teaching Fellows Program at a seminar for Transfer Students.  The reason for our evolvement is based on the idea that the students will have younger siblings or children who might be interested in the Teaching Fellows Program. 

"The March 1st Transfer To Teal open house will be held in James Hall from 10 am to 2 pm.  We currently have more than 100 prospective transfer students registered to attend from all over the United States (approximately 15-18 have indicated an interest in Education)."

  • March 28th: Making Phone Call to Welcome New Teaching Fellows

    I need 3 people to come to the office to make phone calls to the incoming freshmen on the 28th from 3:30- 5:00. There will be a script for you to follow. Let me know if you can help out. Thanks.

    This visit day is for accepted students for the Fall 08 freshman class only.

  • April 10th: Onslow County Future Teacher's Conference in Jacksonville  
  • Where: Coastal Carolina Community College in Jacksonville
  • Time:  Leaving UNCW 7:00 Returning around 3:00. The event is 9:00 to 12:00. 
  • Needed: 2 or 3 Fellows  

You will give a little talk about our program, and set up a table with brochures, etc. for interested students.  Travel will be covered by the program because you will travel with Amy! If you are interested please let Amy know ASAP.

We need 5 or 6 people to eat lunch with a group of N. Johnston County Students, who are interested in pursuing a career in the teaching.  After eating lunch and socializing with them, you will walk to the Education Building and give a brief presentation informing them about our program and your experiences at UNCW.
