What Your "Fellow" Fellows Are Up To...Freshman Class:Freshmen have moved into Schwartz 2nd Floor and are excited about beginning their college careers! Ivy McCreary and Matt Morris are your Freshmen Class Reps for 2007-2008! As the Freshmen class of 2007 Teaching Fellows, we have already experienced many things during our EDN classes with KB. We have been writing letters back and forth with pen-pals at Roland-Grise Middle School and we have had many speakers come in to present to us a new way of thinking about teaching. One of the speakers was from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in South Africa. He came to expand our thinking of how much we take for granted in America and how much the South Africans want education from anyone at any time because they recognize that learning is a privilege, not a right. So, even though it has only been a couple of months, the Freshmen class is already working hard and learning more and more every day. Sophomore Class:Sophomore Class Reps are Jacqui Dalessio and Carie Williamson. Maryanne Garris is on the Travel/Conferences Committee while Breana Van Velzen and Caroline Medford are on the Outreach Committee this year! The Sophomore class has been busy adjusting to classroom procedures in our internships. Two hours a week, we've been observing our classrooms, team teaching, and some of us have even started planning lessons and teaching on our own. Next semester, we'll remain in our internships and continue to expand our knowledge of the teaching process. In our seminar class, we have been busy learning how to navigate through TaskStream and create our Sophomore portfolios. We have also had a few speakers on different aspects of diversity in the classroom and we are beginning to tackle very controversial issues that we can relate back to our own classroom experiences. Junior Class:Junior Class Reps are Brittany Matthews and Lindsay Watkins. Shannon Owens and Lauren Bailey are on the Social Committee while Tana Sisler and Jessica Marva are on the Travel/Conferences Committee this year! In addition, Madison Horeth and Melody Wells are on the Recruitment Committee and Lauren Abernethy and Hayley Fields will be on the Publicity Committee. The Junior class has had several Exemplary Teachers from throughout the county come and speak with our class. They have spoken to us about how they run their classroom and given us "teaching tips". The following are some of the tips we have gotten: Mrs. Pam Baldwin (Middle grades) gave us several interview tips such as showing personal passion and be willing to volunteer but not over do it. Ms. Pamela Smith (Middle grades, NH County Teacher of the Year) says to keep a strict routine and be big on respect. Mrs. Jenny Walters teaches sign language to her Kindergarten class because it is a great way to communicate without actually speaking out loud to students. Dr. Keith Perry (High School Chemistry) says that each day is a new beginning with new experiences. Ms. Hardin (Elementary, 3rd grade) says don't burn yourself out and "be the change you want to see in the world". Mr. Bryan Hayes (H.S. Math) was a TF at Appalachian and has a very technologically advanced classroom. He says to really get to know your students and keep them busy - it will help with behavior management. The Junior class also just registered for Senior Conference and we are very excited for the December Social, which we will be hosting. Senior Class: Senior Class Reps are Jennifer Rausch and Sarah Payne. Congratulations to Ashley Moore on her recent engagement! The wedding is planned for July 2008.
