What have we been doing?

Happy New Year and welcome back to all the Teaching Fellows!  Hopefully your long break was relaxing and you have made a good start to a new semester.  We closed out a wonderful semester with the December Social!  The main course of this annual gathering was a fun-filled talent show featuring many abstract “talents.”  Groups represented every class, but the senior girls took home the winning title at the end of the night with their dance routine.  The senior girls included: Carrie Williamson, Krystal Goris, Katie Pritchard, Naomi Villanueva, Karla Albertson, Nat Cicero, Abby Exum, Kayla Maddox.  We would like to thank all the participants of the talent show and the amazing judges, Mrs. Amy Rottmann, Mr. Ben Brown and Dr. Hank Weddington, for their humor and critique.

The tacky sweater contest also received much attention and participation from the Teaching Fellows.  The top sweaters were adorned with jingles, lights, and even a reindeer hidden behind a door.  The lucky Teaching Fellows who tied for their impressive tacky sweaters were Nick Corak and Justin Fischetti.

Other winners include the Teaching Fellows who received awards for their participation.  Jake Jones was awarded for his outstanding participation in the Social Committee as was Lindsey Jordan in the Outreach Committee, Teddy Walsh and Jennifer Covert for the Travel and Conference Committee, Chris Perez for the Publicity Committee and Jennie Lou Carter for the Fundraising Committee.  Overall, the Outstanding Participation Award went to Jordan Rouse, Tara Tillman and Kristi Waltz, who also have the opportunity of going to the Ron Clark Conference in June.  Although the most important accomplishment of the night goes to the senior Teaching Fellows who graduated this past fall and those who are now involved in their internships.

Hello Fellows,

I think since the month of February is short, I will keep my address short too…ok, stop acting surprised, I can keep things short!  I would first like to thank Trent and Bailey as well as those who helped out on our big day for making Open House such a success!

To all my Fellows, I want to say thank you so much for making the UNCW Teaching Fellows such a great program; and thank you for allowing me to work with each one of you. I truly enjoy coming to work because I am able to work with some phenomenal future teachers.  When I read this quote the other day, I thought of you all: “Be the change you want to see in the world” – Ghandi. I know many of strive to make great changes every day; and I am honored to see, hear, and experiences your positive impact on the world around you. Thank you.

Have a wonderful February!

Love,

Amy

Hello Fellows,

February is off to a cold and blistery start, with the state being hit by three snowstorms in eight days. Of course, Wilmington saw none of this. However, the office is still working hard to better this program on a daily basis.

There are just a few things I would like to point out. We have the Heartburn Ball, next Monday, February 15th in the Burney Center. All Fellows are welcome, and you may also bring a guest. Secondly, remember to always check the calendar on our website for events, and pay attention to my emails so that you can have all the inside information on what is coming up. Thanks for all you do, and keep up the hard work.

Yours Truly,   Tyler Shumate
